Review
‘If there is one word, which characterizes this guide to Transylvania it has to be ‘enthusiasm’. Lucy Mallows’ interest dates back to her early childhood when her mother read to her from fairy stories written by Queen Marie of Romania. She first visited Transylvania in 1997 and now, after repeated visits clearly driven by her love and fascination for the place, she has written one of the first guides to Transylvania to be published in English. Her passion for the place shines through the pages of her guide, generating interest and curiosity on the part of the reader’. - The Budapest Times
About the Author
Born and educated in the UK, Lucy Mallows worked for 12 years in Budapest as a reporter and editor. She first worked as a 'bilingual reporter' in the Hungarian Parliament, getting the inside scoops from the heart of Hungarian politics, often dealing with Hungary's relations to its neighbours; Romania and Slovakia and the rights of the many ethnic Hungarians living beyond Hungary's modern borders. She then spent seven years exploring the region as the cultural editor at The Budapest Sun, and simultaneously wrote about Hungary and the entire Central European region for Bradt Travel Guides, Rough Guides, Time Out, Zagat restaurant guide and DK Eyewitness. In 2003, she became editor-in-chief at Where Budapest, an international travel magazine and in 2005, she moved to Brussels where she reported from the EU Commission. She is an expert on Central European culture and speaks six foreign languages including Hungarian, Czech & Russian. She also made a valiant attempt at learning Romanian to interview local Transylvanians and get a real understanding of the complex region. Recently, she moved to Brighton where she works as a freelance photojournalist and Hungarian-to-English translator. She first visited Transylvania in 1997, but her links with Romania go back to the late 1980s when she worked as a volunteer for Operation Romanian Villages, and to an early childhood fairytale The Lost Princess, written in 1924 by Queen Marie of Romania. Lucy is a fluent Hungarian speaker and Bradt recognised the usefulness of Hungarian language skills in many parts of Transylvania when they commissioned her to write the very first UK-published guidebook to the enchanting, undiscovered region of Romania. Lucy is also the author of the Bradt guides to Bratislava and Slovakia, both also exciting publishing 'firsts'.

GIANT HAYSTACKS
Visitors to Transylvania will return home with one abiding image: hayricks and horse and carts covered with enormous piles of hay balancing precariously. The traditional hayrick (capita de fan) is built according to age-old methods and usually by the grandmother in the family. A central wooden pole is fixed on a bed of dry leaves and the cut, drying grass is built up around the pole while granny stands on top packing the layers down. It’s highly skilful work and the shape of the haystack varies throughout Transylvania: sometimes it’s pear-shaped, sometimes quite thin and pointed, sometimes a chunky pyramid, but always with a sloping watertight top layer. The hay gradually dries in the autumn sun and then the ricks are toppled onto carts and transported to barns for the winter livestock fodder.

Forget Dracula. This is the real thing.
By Jon L Albee
Here's something of which you can be sure: If there's a Bradt guide for your destination, it's the best one, and it's the one you should buy.
So what is it that makes the Bradt guides, and this one in particular, so good? First and foremost, each Bradt guide is lovingly crafted by an author who is absolutely passionate about their adopted home. You're not going to find an author who has spent a lifetime bouncing from one country to the next, churning out text for a broad swath of guidebooks. The key here is focus.
In this case, Lucinda Mallows is obsessed with all things Transylvania, and she brings that enthusiasm to you. All elements of this book are outstanding, from the cultural and historical content to the numerous and well-chosen listings. It may be true that the Bradt guides lack some of the flash of other high-profile guides, but none can match its rich, informative, and enjoyable content. The text features all of the medieval towns and sites that an informed traveler would expect, but also includes many unique outdoor locations and activities.
So, let's mention a few words about the content. Historical and cultural contexts are the obvious emphasis here. Visual content, such as maps and photographs, are more pragmatic than artistic. As with most other guidebooks, this guide includes several "coaching" sections of recommended sites, activites and itineraries. The practical information for travellers is deep, offering advice on more than just how to get there and what electrical adapter to take. Everything from how to tip to how to catch a train is included.
My only complaint is slight. Because Bradt guides are so rich in content, and maintain such high standards for inclusion, new editions are frequently four or five years between. You have to hope that your destination is close to an "on" year for a new edition, or the listings might be out of date. This book was published in early 2013, so you can expect it to be relatively current until 2015 or so.
The author's dedication to this region makes this book the best possible guide to its numerous, fascinating attractions.

Only Useful If Driving
By Ikat
I dislike guidebooks like this. They are essentially "what to see along the road when driving" especially here, where it covers a small section of Translyvania and then moves on to the next such area. Therefore, it's only value for people who aren't driving is to look up specific towns or villages whose names you already know, no for some basic maps of key places. I dislike the organization, where what there is to see in a town is at the end of the section on that town,
This would benefit from suggested itineraries for different modes of travel and some type of list of "bests" by type, e.g., castles.
