Research Interests
Martocchio's research interests focus on various human resource management issues, including employee training, compensation, and absenteeism. He is the author of numerous articles in such journals as Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, and the Industrial and Labor Relations Review. Martocchio received the Ernest J. McCormick Award for Distinguished Early Career Contributions from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He also is a fellow of the Society as well as the American Psychological Association.
Martocchio is the editor of an annual research series titled Research in Personnel and Human Resources Management, published by Elsevier. The series publishes monograph length conceptual papers designed to promote theory and research on important substantive and methodological topics in the field of human resources management.
He is currently the Professional Development Workshop Chair of the Academy of Management Human Resource Division. He will assume additional leadership roles, culminating in the Chair of the HR Division.

At last, a text my students like! That's a victory.

This is a well written, comprehensive presentation of compensation and benefits, including such subjects as skill / knowledge based pay and executive and international compensation. Its features include summaries, questions with links to the www, key terms, and thought-provoking "flip side of the coin" and "reflection" inserts. Includes a useful glossary of terms. The author places considerable emphasis on current issues and that is appreciated.
I am writing as a reviewer, consultant and university instructor. I use this text in teaching my introductory compensation course at UCLA's School of Business and Management. I have tried many texts that my students bemoaned as too technical, boring, and somniferous. But my students find this text highly readable, understandable and interesting. That's a victory, especially when my students are mostly working HR professionals who drag themselves to class through the clogged freeways of Los Angeles. The least I can offer them is a good textbook; this is it!

Addition to the Edition

I assign this textbook to my graduate compensation students. It is better than the well-worn and in-need-of-being updated Henderson textbook. I like the "strategic" focus of this book, but the consistency of applying the "Low Cost Competitive/Differentiation" paradigm breaks down in a few of the chapters. That said, it is clearer, more concise, and more relevant than Henderson.
However, what's up with the "new edition every month"* situation? This new edition costs substantially more than the one before (which was already very expensive).
If there are any compensation teachers out there, please be considerate of your students and allow them to buy and use the 4th edition. It is available to them for considerably lesser cost...
And, most importantly, the actual value of the changes to this book, between editions 4 and 5, is pretty questionable. Some graphs and tables are different, but not a whole lot else.
Finally, I still use Jerry McAdams' "The Reward Plan Advantage" to address many, many issues (including business strategy issues) which are overlooked in this text. While there is a chapter on incentives in Martocchio, the topic receives nowhere near the comprehensive treatment we get from McAdams.
And one student told me she got McAdams for $0.75. If delivering value to our students is what it is all about...what an ROI!!
* This was only intended as a figure of speech. It has actually been revised only twice in the last five years.

I really do not like this book

I really do not like this book....for many reasons. I think the chapters are very poorly laid out. For example.....there is an entire section based on employee benefits....which is divided into subsections called discretionary benefits, employer sponsored benefit programs, and legally required benefits. All very important topics no doubt....however, the author chooses to put "designing and planning the benefits program" at the end of the legally required benefits section. This is silly. Why wouldn't this be part of the employer sponsored benefit section?? After you learn about the benefit options, you would want to know how to construct a program....not just jammed in at the end of the legally required section. This happens a lot throughout the book. After thoughts of topics that should have been included in previous sections. The other issue i have with this book is that it states the obvious multiple times. There are many times when reading this book that I think to myself....wow, that is such an obvious statement and waste of words. There doesn't seem to be much meat in the book and a lot of bones. Not my first choice for a book on compensation.
