This book has been designed for non-native speakers of the Persian language. It is an illustrated collection of 30 Persian idioms that you could learn and use in your daily conversations in Persian. Each idiom is presented with the “literal” translation in English to help you memorize the component parts. In addition, the “figurative” definition is given to communicate the true meaning of the idiom. Finally, an example in Persian with its English translation is provided to help you gain better understanding of the usage of the idiom in daily conversations. The transliteration of the idioms and related examples are also provided in this book. To make the learning process fun, each idiom is accompanied by a graphic illustration, which is based on the “literal” translation of the idiom, rather its “figurative” definition. VERY GOOD RESOURCE TO LEARN PERSIAN IDIOMS WITH FUNNY PICTURE

Good edutainment!
By David.et.Sara Pritchard
My wife is Persian and I have been learning Farsi here and there for the last couple of years. This book is exactly what I was looking for... each idiom has

- the Farsi spelling of each idiom _including_ the vowel marks, which normally are left out
- the transliteration just to double-check your pronunciation
- the English explanation of each phrase
- a sample usage
- and yes, last but not least, the cartoons, which are definitely smile-inducing.

It is not a huge book, but I am learning slowly so there is enough material in here to keep me busy for the rest of the year.

It will be difficult for a novice to follow this book alone. If you have already taken an introductory course in Farsi, or if you have a significant other/teacher to help you along and explain the conjugations etc, then it is actually a good learning aid, true to its title.

Merci Nazanin! Dastet dard nakoneh.

Not happy.
By Donna M. Couture
Kindle Version - This book isn't formatted for use on Kindle. It appears to be a pdf which doesn't allow you to use any of the Kindle features. Also forget about reading it on your computer because it apparently won't work. Why the publisher is charging so much for a non kindle version and claiming it is, is beyond me. Buyer Beware. I should have just purchased the printed book. Not happy.

Franklin Barbecue: A Meat-Smoking Manifesto, by Aaron Franklin, Jordan Mackay

A New York Times best selling complete meat- and brisket-cooking education from the country's most celebrated pitmaster and owner of the wildly popular Austin restaurant Franklin Barbecue.

When Aaron Franklin and his wife, Stacy, opened up a small barbecue trailer on the side of an Austin, Texas, interstate in 2009, they had no idea what they’d gotten themselves into. Today, Franklin Barbecue has grown into the most popular, critically lauded, and obsessed-over barbecue joint in the country (if not the world)—and Franklin is the winner of every major barbecue award there is.

In this much-anticipated debut, Franklin and coauthor Jordan Mackay unlock the secrets behind truly great barbecue, and share years’ worth of hard-won knowledge. Franklin Barbecue is a definitive resource for the backyard pitmaster, with chapters dedicated to building or customizing your own smoker; finding and curing the right wood; creating and tending perfect fires; sourcing top-quality meat; and of course, cooking mind-blowing, ridiculously delicious barbecue, better than you ever thought possible.

Review
New York Times Best Seller

“Aaron Franklin makes the finest barbecue I’ve ever had, barbecue worth waiting for. His work and his words express a truly rare level of commitment and expertise. With Franklin Barbecue, he shares it all—in a book that, fortunately, you don’t have to wait for.”
— Anthony Bourdain

“I used to think Aaron Franklin was a genius: There was his rise from backyard dabbler to king of Texas pitmasters; his mind-altering brisket that made normally rational people (myself included) wait hours for the chance to eat it; and his insistence that game-changing barbecue doesn’t come from miracles but rather elbow grease. Then he wrote this book and gave all his secrets away.
Now everyone—from me to you to your neighbor who can’t grill a chicken breast—will be able
to make award-winning barbecue. He’s not a genius anymore; he’s a god.”
— Andrew Knowlton, restaurant and drinks editor, Bon Appétit

“The most refreshing barbecue book to come along yet. Rather than preaching about ‘one true way,’ Aaron Franklin guides you through all the wood and smoke so that you can find your own style. And instead of just listing ingredients and rattling off generic recipes, these pages tell the story of a place and a barbecue tradition steeped in history. This isn’t just a book about barbecue;
this book is Central Texas barbecue.”
— Daniel Vaughn, barbecue editor, Texas Monthly, and author of The Prophets of Smoked Meat

“Pure genius! Aaron Franklin has distilled years’ worth of barbecue knowledge into this book.
In it, he exposes the sacred insights of a top pitmaster—information that can otherwise only be learned from long nights spent staring at a fire, shovel in hand, constantly prodding and pinching your meat to figure out that ‘just perfect’ point of doneness. This book is a game changer: read it, and your barbecue will improve overnight!”
— Adam Perry Lang, chef, restaurateur, and author of Serious Barbecue

“A complete meat-and brisket-cooking education from the country’s most celebrated pitmaster. More than just a recipe book, this is a master course in the fine art of meat smoking, Texas-style.”
— Library Journal

Franklin is also the host of the PBS series BBQ with Franklin. He and his wife live in Austin with their daughter.

The notion of putting everything I know about barbecue into a book is a daunting one. Not because I know so much—I’m still learning—but because of the nature of barbecue itself. It’s because the printed word—definitive, exacting, permanent—is in many ways antithetical to the process of cooking barbecue, which is, for lack of a better word, loosey-goosey.

So many people want to have a recipe, but with all of the variables in barbecue—wood, quality of fire, meat selection, type of cooker, weather, and so on—there is no “magic” recipe. It just doesn’t operate with absolutes of temperature, time, and measurement. In fact, there are no rights or wrongs in barbecue (well, that may be a stretch), no “just one way,” and certainly no simple “black and white.” You’re much better off with general knowledge of what you want and an arsenal of tricks to have up your sleeve.

So unlike most books that you may flip through a few times and then place on the shelf
to display with the others, I hope this one will live a good portion of its life out in the field, be it in the kitchen or out by the smoker. These recipes aren’t really recipes but more of an idea of how I go about cooking barbecue and some guidelines.

Now, this book is not a survey of barbecue traditions across the country. While I’ve been all over the United States and have eaten lots of great barbecue, there’s really only one tradition that I know intimately: my own. My style is steeped in the tradition of Central Texas, but it’s also got some wrinkles that I discovered along the way.

So, with the greatest respect to all of the other styles around the country, in this book, all I discuss is what we do. Yes, I am wedded to the tradition of great Central Texas barbecue and the principles it holds—brisket, oak, open flame—but I’m also always willing to try something new or look into new designs that might make things cook faster and better. And my hope is that by being hyperdetailed and specific about my techniques, I will help you in your cooking and in your ability to develop your own style too. At Franklin Barbecue, the only thing we’ve got is the dedication to make the best food we can and to keep it consistently the same every day (which itself is the biggest challenge). It’s that dedication that keeps us evolving as cooks and constantly thinking about new ways to do old things.

You’ll notice that there’s a serious thread of do-it-yourself running through this book. That’s because one of the words with which I’ve been known to describe myself is cheap. For large stretches of my life, I didn’t have the cash to buy things I wanted, so I often just figured out how to make them myself. In the process, I sometimes discovered how to make them better or at least how to tailor them to my own needs. However, while I participate in DIY culture and continue to build stuff all of the time, it’s by no means necessary to take this approach in order to benefit from this book. I say, use whatever equipment you’ve got on hand; ideally, the information I present here will help you make the best of it.

Most barbecue books I’ve looked at are organized around the major food groups: beef, pork, poultry, and so on. (At least, those are my food groups.) In this book, which isn’t heavily focused on recipes, I’ve taken a different approach. It’s a more elemental and theoretical breakdown of the barbecue process. In each chapter, I drill down into some fairly technical information with regard to how the process of barbecue works. It can get a little geeky, but I hope that in a way the geekiness keeps you engaged. I include this information because I myself love the technical details. Understanding how something works is the first step toward successfully replicating and improving it.

The first chapter is an extended telling of my own story. I include it at this length not for the purpose of vanity, but the opposite—so that everyone can see how you don’t have to have much money, history, training, or even time to become proficient at barbecue. I really just want to show how a love for barbecue coupled with enthusiasm can equal really good-tasting smoked meat. If I can do this, you can too.

The second chapter is all about the smoker. In Texas, this piece of equipment might be called a smoker, cooker, and pit all in the same sentence, but whatever you call it, barbecue practitioners have no end of fascination with these clunky steel constructions. Everyone who designs and builds his or her own smoker does something a little bit different, always looking for that tweak that will improve its performance. In this chapter, I talk about various kinds of smokers and various modifications you can make to improve the performance of an inexpensive off-the-rack smoker you might buy at an outdoors store. I also give a very basic template for how to build your own smoker from scratch. It’s by no means a blueprint but rather intended to give you an idea of what to think about if you undertake such a project. While smoker construction sounds—and is—fairly ambitious, I can tell you that I’ve built very heavy smokers in my backyard with a cheap welder, rope, and a tree branch to hoist pieces up.

Chapter three is about wood. Wood is our sole fuel, but it’s also arguably the most important seasoning in the food. Without wood, barbecue wouldn’t be barbecue, so we have to take the wood we use as seriously as we would any ingredient in any dish. Just as you wouldn’t sauté meats and vegetables in rancid butter, you want to use good-quality firewood in pristine condition whenever possible. In this chapter, you’ll learn all about seasoning, splitting, buying, and judging wood for barbecue. After reading it, you’ll definitely be wanting your own little woodpile in the backyard. Just keep it dry.

It’s no big leap from wood to fire and smoke, the subjects of chapter four. Most people don’t realize there are gradations of smoke and fire. But a good fire and the fine smoke it produces are two of the most fundamental elements to producing superior Central Texas barbecue. In this chapter, I get into the nitty-gritty of what good smoke and fire mean and how to produce them in various conditions. It’s a bit sciencey, but it also tends to be pretty interesting, so hopefully you’ll get a lot out of it.

Chapter five is about meat. One of things I do differently from most other barbecue joints is use a higher grade of meat. It makes things more expensive for everyone (including me), but I think it’s worth it not only for the quality of the end product but also for the quality of life of the humans eating it and of the noble animals that were sacrificed to bring us this food. You’ll learn here what certain grades of meat mean, where they come from on the animal, and how to go about selecting the best meat for your cooking.

Chapter six is a doozy. It’s the one where I finally get into the actual cooking of the meat. If you buy this book and just want to dive right in, you could start here, though I recommend going back at some time to read all of the other stuff. This is the chapter where I do things like suggest temperatures and times for your cook, even though ultimately you have to figure out the fine details of these things for your own kind of cooker, your own conditions, and ultimately your own taste. But I do talk about other important stuff like trimming meats, rubbing, and wrapping—all the techniques that will help your meat turn out great. The bulk of this chapter is devoted to brisket and ribs, which are the two most popular meats, and cooked using the two basic methods of cooking we do. All of our other fare basically follows these methods, so to learn how to cook brisket and ribs in a smoker is to learn how to cook just about anything.

Lastly, we talk a little bit about sides, sauces, serving, drinking, and all of the stuff that goes hand in hand with enjoying the fruits of your labor. In Central Texas, sides and sauces are always considered secondary to the meat, if indeed necessary at all. So I don’t place a huge emphasis on them, even though I will admit that our beans are really good. More important is brisket slicing technique, which is something I go into detail about here. It’s hard to train people to cut brisket really well, but once you practice and repeat it, you’ll be glad to have good skill in this area, since there’s nothing worse than hacking up something you just spent a day coddling. And at last, beer, like day and night, is a fact of life for the pitmaster, and it’s something I think about a lot! So I talk a little about what I like and what I think works best with barbecue, though beer in general gets a big fat Yes.

Hopefully, while you read this book, you’ll find yourself chomping at the bit to get out there and throw a few racks of ribs or a big, honking brisket onto your smoker. And all I can say is, Go for it! The key to my own development—and it will be to yours—is repetition. Just as with anything, the more you do it, the better you’ll get. In barbecue that’s especially true, particularly if you pay close attention along the way to what you did during the cooking process and when you did it, and then you note the final results and think about how to make the next cook better. That’s what I did, and my barbecue improved steadily along the way. And I didn’t even have a resource like this book.

Ultimately, that’s the best advice I can give. Do, and do some more. Drink beer, but not so much that you lose track of what you’re doing. And pay attention. Sweat the details and you’ll end up producing barbecue that would make the most seasoned of pitmasters proud.

Fig Ancho Beer  Barbecue sauce
I don’t serve this at the restaurant, but I do make fun sauces for some events—and this sauce combines a few of my favorite things.
Makes about 6 cups

4 ancho chiles, rehydrated in 41/2 cups hot water and the water reserved
12 figs, grilled, stemmed, and quartered
1/2 yellow onion, sliced
4 tablespoons butter
11/2 cups brown sugar
1 (12-ounce) bottle (11/2 cups) stout or porter beer
(I prefer Left Hand Brewing’s milk stout)
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup cider vinegar
6 tablespoons fig preserves
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon coarse black pepper

In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the chiles, figs, and onion in the butter for about 10 minutes, until the figs and chiles are tender and the onion is translucent. Transfer to a blender and add the sugar, stout, ketchup, both vinegars, the preserves, honey, salt, and pepper. Puree until smooth, adding as much of the reserved chile soaking liquid as needed to reach the desired texture. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

A Book as Good as his BBQ
By DavidB
If you're looking for that silver bullet that explains why your brisket isn't as good as Franklin's, you won't find it here. The truth is, there is no silver bullet. You want to believe that it's some magic ingredient, temperature, or other trivial element that makes his brisket so good and if you only knew that 1 secret, yours would be just as good. It's not that easy. It's a process. In all seriousness, he does let you in on the secret behind his great food, but it's not an easy shortcut. He had a passion, he tinkered, he produced some really bad BBQ but persevered, he paid attention to the details, tweaked some to experiment, found out what worked and what didn't and then, over time, became an expert with a well-developed sense of intuition. The truth is that formula has worked for hundreds of people, great writers, radio hosts, businessmen, programmers and other professionals uses that exact same set of steps to become masters, read their biographies and listen to their interviews, it's the same story. It's hard work, it's not because Aaron uses pickle juice blessed by a New Orleans witch doctor during an eclipse as an injection precisely 14.373581 hours before it goes on the grill. It's because he's got years of practice, years of paying attention to the details, learning what matters and what doesn't, and then persevering through the failures those experiments yielded.

You might think since I've given away the "secret" to Franklin's BBQ, there's no reason to buy the book, right? You're wrong. In this book he imparts his story, which is interesting, he gives you several clues on which things matter and which things don't so you can start your journey with more knowledge than he did. You won't buy this book and then suddenly be able to cook the best BBQ on the planet, but you'll have a deeper understanding of the craft and you'll know where you should experiment and where you should learn from his mistakes.

I found this book immensely valuable in my journey toward becoming an excellent pitmaster. I pre ordered the book and devoured it's info in just less than 48 hours after opening it. I did so because I ate at Franklins and it was the best BBQ I ever had, I made a bet that Franklin's book would be as excellent as his BBQ and I was right. There's a lot of great information here, but it's not like most BBQ books. It's much more about the process than the recipes (though it does have some). If you want a shortcut, look elsewhere but I think you'll ultimately be disappointed in the results. If you truly want to become a pitmaster and you're willing to put in some work, this is an excellent book to guide you in the right direction.

Best information ive read so far.
By G. Hernandez
Outstanding guide to help you achieve the best BBQ you can make. Remember, these are guidlines, not recipies. I've been following his advice through his video series on youtube, and it has helped immensely. With this manifesto, I should be able to improve even more.

Informative and entertaining, I've found myself laughing out loud a few times. Buy this book, make good BBQ.

The Only Meat-Smoking Book You May Ever Need
By Crystal Boyle
I love everything about Franklin Barbecue: A Meat-Smoking Manifesto by Aaron Franklin and Jordan Mackay. I initially got this book for my husband, who is an amateur smoker always looking to improve. However, once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I didn't get halfway through the book before wanting to run to the store to get a quality brisket and make my own smoker.
The first chapter of this book is dedicated to how Franklin took his interest in smoking meat from a hobby to a food truck to the successful lunch-only restaurant he runs today. I was really interested in the back story and appreciated his insight into starting a business and following your passion.
Chapters 2, 3 & 4 are The Smoker, Wood, and Fire + Smoke. The Smoker covers everything from how to choose your smoker to building your own. In Wood, Franklin discusses how to find the best wood to use in your smoker and how to find a good source for it. Fire + Smoke is devoted to building a fire and creating that magical smoke that will take your meat from good to great. This may sound boring, between the style of writing and the details, I found all of it fascinating.
Chapters 5, 6 & 7 are Meat, The Cook, and Serving + Eating. Meat is an incredibly interesting chapter on how to choose good meat and some of the "behind the scenes" from Franklin's restaurant. I went to the store armed with all sorts of things to look for in order to find meat that would be worthy of the time it took to smoke it. The Cook prepares you for smoking your meat and includes a few recipes. At first, I was a bit disappointed at the vagueness of Franklin's recipes. However, he encourages the home smoker to start smoking and develop their own tastes and recipes and I see the value of his words. Serving + Eating shows how to properly cut a brisket and includes a few more recipes for sauces and sides.
If you are at all interested in smoking meat, this is the book for you. The cover is beautiful, the chapters well organized, and the information is invaluable.
I received this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for this review, but all the opinions are my own.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
This box set started right where it was left in part 4. I have to say it was a great read. Bethany and Damon’s feelings starts to really grow further and you can see their relationship moving.
Will Damon finally let his guard down? Will Bethany give in to her feelings?
Will Damon’s father and Bethany’s mother accept what they have? Or will they reject their children?

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this book. It was a good read Ali

Out of Date, For Millionaires and Poorly Edited
By A Customer
This book was a pretty big disappointment and obviously written before the Net bubble burst. I am very surprised by all the 5-star reviews here... makes one go hmmm...
First, the book is out of date already. Published in the beginning of 2000 means it was written in 1999 and it shows. Many of the links are dead, or the businesses have changed their focus or been taken over by someone else. The recommendations are for the time when venture capital was plenty and business plans were optional. Those days are over...
Second, this book is geared to a millionaire who has big bucks to blow. There is information on servers and RAID redudancy that is too detailed for the non-techie and too shallow for the tech savvy. I doubt many people starting up an e-business today are looking to spend close to a million. They are looking for a "guerilla" style e-commerce book to get up and running under a few thousand dollars. And, yes, it can be done! I guess I'll have to write that book if no one else does.
Third, this book is poorly edited with incorrect subject/verb agreement and accept/except style grammatical confusion. Unfortunately I have come to expect poor editing in programming books, but c'mon, this is a book written for a general audience without coding... get a decent editor!
I do give this book one star over the minimum because it does contain some good material but it is not worth buying. Find it in a library or bookstore to copy the useful information as it is not useful as a reference or worth a close read.

Best of Breed on thisTopic!
By SV
Excellent book! I consult in the area of Internet/Technology start-up development and marketing from the heart of Silicon Valley for clients world wide and read this well written book to glean a deeper insight into the internal workings from a deeper technology perspective (for the nuts and bolts), than what I am usually exposed to and was very pleased by both the material coverage and presentation. I simply do not have much time to read but I took the time to read this important book over a few nights as it directly relates to being successful on the net. Few books I have read have had more direct impact on my overall understanding of a topic.
Unlike most books in this particular space that I have skimmed/read, this book is not dry or long-winded. The coverage length of each topic is in relation to its importance and is wide enough to give you the connections between the subtopics to make sense of e-commerce. I have spent many hours looking for a book that covered this topic without taking either the "Dummy" or "Idiot" attitude on the low-end or the boring academic text on the high-end.
This book exceeded my expectations and I would suggest it to industry professional and first-time netrepreneur alike. In my opinion, this is the "Best of Breed" book and plan on suggesting its reading in an intern program I am leading at a well-known Silicon Valley business school. If I could only have one book on the topic of e-commerce - this would be it. Good work!

recommend this book as an addition to your reference library
By A Customer
This book provides an introduction to the various technical and business aspects of e-commerce for the business executive. The author delves into some of the more technical aspects, such as how a company can connect its databases to off-the-shelf e-commerce software and describes what a server does and give an overview of the features of the top-selling server software. She also summarizes the possibilities of electronic payments and how they work, as well as the kinds of security that are needed in various parts of an e-commerce network and why. The final chapters in the book provide an in-depth look at marketing, order processing and fulfillment and customer service. Readers without a great deal of technical expertise should have no trouble understanding it as the author focuses on the details in a way that delivers concise, cohesive, and coherent ideas to the layperson. Although you might find a better book, this book does have an extensive glossary and good directory of Web resources. All in all, I highly recommend making this book as an addition to your reference library!

A Demon of Our Own Design: Markets, Hedge Funds, and the Perils of Financial Innovation, by Richard Bookstaber

Inside markets, innovation, and risk

Why do markets keep crashing and why are financial crises greater than ever before? As the risk manager to some of the leading firms on Wall Street–from Morgan Stanley to Salomon and Citigroup–and a member of some of the world’s largest hedge funds, from Moore Capital to Ziff Brothers and FrontPoint Partners, Rick Bookstaber has seen the ghost inside the machine and vividly shows us a world that is even riskier than we think. The very things done to make markets safer, have, in fact, created a world that is far more dangerous. From the 1987 crash to Citigroup closing the Salomon Arb unit, from staggering losses at UBS to the demise of Long-Term Capital Management, Bookstaber gives readers a front row seat to the management decisions made by some of the most powerful financial figures in the world that led to catastrophe, and describes the impact of his own activities on markets and market crashes. Much of the innovation of the last 30 years has wreaked havoc on the markets and cost trillions of dollars. A Demon of Our Own Design tells the story of man’s attempt to manage market risk and what it has wrought. In the process of showing what we have done, Bookstaber shines a light on what the future holds for a world where capital and power have moved from Wall Street institutions to elite and highly leveraged hedge funds.

Review
“Mr. Bookstaber wrote one of the best books about the causes of the financial crisis, A Demon of Our Own Design, and did so before the crisis erupted.”-- Floyd Norris, New York Times (June 25, 2009)

"A risk-management maven who's been on Wall Street for decades…Bookstaber's book shows us some complex strategies that very smart people followed to seemingly reduce risk—but that led to huge losses." (Newsweek)

"Mr. Bookstaber is one of Wall Street's 'rocket scientists'--mathematicians lured from academia to help create both complex financial instruments and new computer models for making investing decisions. In the book, he makes a simple point: The turmoil in the financial markets today comes less from changes in the economy--economic growth, for example, is half as volatile as it was 50 years ago--and more from some of the financial instruments (derivatives) that were designed to control risk." (The New York Times)

"Bright sparks like Mr Bookstaber ushered in a revolution that fuelled the boom in financial derivatives and Byzantine 'structured products.' The problem, he argues, is that this wizardry has made markets more crisis-prone, not less so. It has done this in two ways: by increasing complexity, and by forging tighter links between various markets and securities, making them dangerously interdependent." (The Economist)

"He understands the inner workings of financial markets...A liberal sparkling of juicy stories from the trading floor..." (The Economist)

"…smart book…Part memoir, part market forensics, the book gives an insider's view…" (Bloomberg News)

"Like many pessimistic observers, Richard Bookstaber thinks financial derivatives, Wall Street innovation and hedge funds will lead to a financial meltdown. What sets Mr. Bookstaber apart is that he has spent his career designing derivatives, working on Wall Street and running a hedge fund." (The Wall Street Journal)

"Every so often [a book] pops out of the pile with something original to say, or an original way of saying it. Richard Bookstaber, in A Demon of Our Own Design: Markets, Hedge Funds, and the Perils of Financial Innovation, accomplishes both of these rare feats." (Fortune)

"a must-read amidst the current market chaos" (BusinessWeek.com)

"Bookstaber is a former academic who went on to head risk management for Morgan Stanley and now runs a large hedge fund. He knows the subject and has written a lucid and readable book. To his aid he calls mathematics (from Bertrand Russell to Godel's theorem); physics (particularly Heisenberg's uncertainty principle); and even -- meteorology." (Financial Times)

"The book covers a lot about risk management that is relevant to capital markets conditions today and the liquidity crisis." (Financial Times, Saturday 25th August)

"...an insider's guide to markets, hedge funds and the perils of financial innovation.  We saw plenty of those in 2007."  (The Sunday Telegraph, Sunday 25th November 2007)

"I cannot recommend this book too highly. It is a clear exposition of what the combination of derivatives, leverage and hedge funds can do to the markets.

In short, A Demon of our Own Design is a guide to the dangerous financial markets we have created for ourselves by the clever innovations of structured finance, derivatives, credit default swaps and other newfangled products that are a mystery to the ordinary investor and even plenty of the sophisticates in the investment business. To understand the demonic risks we're taking, read this book."--Forbes.com

From the Inside Flap

It's Wall Street's most painful paradox. Investors are more sophisticated than ever, are enabled by unprecedented technology, and protected by more government oversight and regulation than at any other time in history. Yet Wall Street is becoming a riskier and riskier place. Crashes and catastrophic losses seem commonplace. Hedge funds wreck on the financial shoals with a disturbingly familiar pattern. Worse, today's financial crises do not arise from economic instability or acts of nature, but from the very design of the financial markets themselves.

In A Demon of Our Own Design, Richard Bookstaber paints a vivid picture of a financial world that is ever edging toward disaster. As a hedge fund 'rocket scientist,' Bookstaber provides an insider's perspective to the tumultuous management decisions made by some of the world's most powerful financial figures from Warren Buffett to Sandy Weill to John Meriwether,as well as recounting his own contribution to market calamities. He designed some of the complex options and derivatives that, combined with the globalization of the world's markets and the ever-increasing speed of transactions, allow markets to slide out of control. And he explains why the best efforts of institutions on the front lines to create safeguards, manage risk, and regulate the markets may end up contributing to instability. Bookstaber argues that many of the financial innovations and regulations that are supposed to level the playing field instead make the markets more dangerous for all the players, big and small.

Drawing on his intimate knowledge of such infamous disasters as the 1987 Crash and the demise of Long-Term Capital Management, Bookstaber identifies the key areas that make markets vulnerable: liquidity that begets greater leverage; innovation that creates greater complexity; and a structure that demands a nonhuman level of rationality. The twofold solution he suggests—reducing complexity and breaking the tight coupling of transactions—goes against the prevailing winds of Wall Street, but will lead to a more robust and survivable market.

Praise for A Demon of Our Own Design

"This book is powerful stuff. When the hero of the story is a cockroach, you are assured of a controversial, illuminating, and fascinating discovery of where the financial risks really lurk and how to avoid them. Bookstaber knows whereof he speaks."
—Peter L. Bernstein, author of Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk

"Are you ready for the real deal? An insider, everysider view of the Wall Street calamities that have kept investing tantalizingly hot and frighteningly volatile since the crash of '87. For an in-depth, curtains-open, and coolly written exposition of Wall Street, Bookstaber is my man."

The Wisdom of the Cockroach
By Mercenary Trader
In recounting his time as risk manager at a number of prominent houses (Morgan Stanley, Salomon Brothers, Citigroup etc.), Bookstaber completes the i-banking trifecta. First there was the Michael Lewis classic, Liar's Poker, detailing the juvenile bravado and macho antics of the trading floor. Then Jonathan Knee gave an intimate portrait of the i-banker deal making culture with The Accidental Investment Banker.

And now, in A Demon of Our Own Design, we get a glimpse at the risk management side of things... a sort of master plumber's walking tour through the bowels of the system, with technical descriptions of exactly what happens when pipes burst and boilers explode. (Some will find Bookstabers' level of detail intolerably dull; others will find it quite fascinating. I was in the fascinated camp.)

Nature of the beast

In describing the finer points of risk arbitrage, Bookstaber explains why it's normal -- expected even -- for trading desks to take a good whack every so often. The nature of the beast is to make relatively steady profits, month in and month out, and then give back a chunk of those profits when something goes haywire. (That's how you move huge sums on an arb desk; grind out small bets that are almost guaranteed to work, juice up the returns with leverage, and try not to be in the vicinity when the rare position goes kablooey.)

In light of this general modus operandi, perhaps it isn't surprising that the "quant" funds recently took a major hit (as of September 2007). They had been minting money for an extraordinarily long period, had the leverage to show for it, and now, after the recent "oops," seem to be generally back in business.

In fact it appears natural for much of Wall Street to work in this "make a little, lose a lot" fashion... the key idea being that all the little updrafts make up for the once-in-a-blue-moon downdrafts. (Such calculus works better for the fee collectors than the fee payers, but that's a different kettle of fish.)

Bookstaber's detail-rich description of the various trades that investment houses put on, many of them lasting years, is also enlightening. The details seem to confirm that, by and large, Wall Street is a gigantic, slow moving, conventional-returns type machine. (And what else could it be, really, with such an ocean of capital to allocate and so many jobs to fill? There is only so much creativity and contrarianism to go round.)

A dangerous combination

Risk manager war stories aside, Bookstaber's goal is to hammer home a key philosophical point regarding risk. He wants readers to understand that financial markets are inherently unstable, and this reality places limits on how far we (or anyone) should go in pursuit of outsized returns.

To make his point, Bookstaber uses various analogies to describe how the market is a highly complex, tightly coupled system... and to explain why the combination of high complexity and tight coupling is particularly dangerous.

The counterexample Bookstaber gives of a highly complex, loosely coupled system is the US Postal Service. The USPS has countless potential points of failure and myriad moving parts, but there are no catastrophic linkages involved. A lost package does not set off a disastrous daisy chain of events in which millions of packages are lost.

In contrast, the classic example of a highly complex, tightly coupled system is a nuclear reactor. The reactor is tightly coupled because any point of failure can lead to a knock-on chain reaction; one small thing going wrong can set the entire mechanism on a path to disaster. Being a highly complex, tightly coupled system, the market is less like the postal service and more like the nuclear reactor, in that the combination of aggressive leverage, complex methodologies and heavily interlocking parts leads to significant potential for catastrophe.

Exquisitely adapted

Another serious problem is Wall Street's deeply ingrained tendency to push the envelope. (Richard Lowenstein put it exceptionally well in his book Origins of the Crash: "Finance has its own Peter Principle, by which a successful model will be adapted to progressively riskier causes until it fails.")

In this habit of fighting for every inch of profit, Wall Street is like a self-evolving animal overquick to embrace the particulars of its immediate environment. The more precisely an animal is attuned to a particular "fitness landscape," the better that animal can thrive... in the short term at least, as long as everything stays just so. To be exquisitely adapted (as opposed to robustly adapted) is to be vulnerable to the slightest change.

Thus when the fitness landscape DOES change -- as it inevitably will -- the heavily specialized competitors tend to get crushed (if not go extinct). If a strategy-gone-sour broadsides a large enough group of market participants, the entire financial ecosystem can be thrown into turmoil. When the turmoil from this upheaval spills into the broader economy, wreaking havoc in its wake, the "demon" spoken of in the book's title is unleashed. (As this reviewer interprets it anyway.)

Wisdom of the cockroach

So the problem, in sum, is Wall Street's tendency to `overadapt' to every appealing landscape it encounters, building up complexity and leverage to dangerous levels in doing so.

Bookstaber's suggestion is to heed the wisdom of the cockroach.

The cockroach has survived a longer time span, and a wider variety of harsh environments, than humans could ever match. It is one of the creatures man cannot wipe out no matter how hard he tries. And yet, the cockroach's key risk management strategy is embarrassingly simple... simpler, even, than putting in a stop loss. The deeper point is that simple equals robust; by refusing to get fancy, and sticking with the tried-and-true, the cockroach ensures its reign as champion survivor.

Bookstaber uses the cockroach (and other examples from nature) to argue that we, too, should consider cutting back on our excessively specialized ways. The cost of a rough-edged strategy is forgoing excess profits in accomodative environments... but the benefit is increased likelihood of survival in a much wider range of environments, including the truly harsh ones. (As Jim Grant likes to joke, if so many of these credit-driven vehicles can barely handle prosperity, how are they supposed to fare when adversity hits?)

Harrumphs all round

Bookstaber's finger-wagging solution (be less fancy; take less risk) has the ring of common sense to it, especially in the way it frustrates all those market participants determined to have their cake and eat it too.

For those who seek to wring every last nickel out of the market (as LTCM used to brag of doing), Bookstaber argues persuasively that flying too close to the sun will always be perilous. The commitment to leveraging every edge on a broad scale inevitably leads to disaster-prone configurations, no matter how smart the players.

For those who think the answer is greater regulation of markets, i.e. more rules, Bookstaber shows how extra layers of bureaucracy can actually bring about the exact opposite of the intended affect. Perversely, layers of red tape can (and often do) make a situation more risky, by increasing confusion and complacency simultaneously.

Nor is greater information disclosure the answer. If the market's traditional liquidity providers (traders, market makers, speculators etc.) are forced to disclose their positions to the world in real time, they will react in the manner of poker players forced to play their hands face-up. To the extent that disclosure resolves uncertainty, it also drives market participants from the game. And because "liquidity is a coward" as the old saying goes, always running away when you need it most, strict disclosure rules would likely make bad market conditions worse at the least opportune times.

Some left smiling

Two groups in particular may be left smiling at the end of this book -- value investors and trend followers. In both the theory and practice of their normal operations, value investors and trend followers intuitively embraced Bookstaber's message a long long time ago, favoring longevity and robusticity over the temptations of adjusting to the moment.

It is perhaps not surprising, then, that value investors and trend followers are arguably the most profitable market participants by far on an absolute-dollar basis, hauling in hundreds of billions in profit over the course of many decades. They are champion survivors too... with a touch more class than the cockroach.

Essential context for understanding trading
By Aaron C. Brown
This is an entertaining account of 25 years of financial disasters by a smart insider who is also a keen observer and witty storyteller. Some authors take simple ideas and cloud them with hairsplitting definitions and complex equations, real mathematicians like Bookstaber effortlessly work in deep concepts like sufficient statistics and state variables without any equations or formal mathematics.

The best part of this book is the context. If you read books on individual disasters the situations come across as complex and the people as tragic geniuses. If you read the one paragraph versions favored by the business press, the underlying trades seem impossibly simple, and the protagonists seem to be morons. This book shows the euphoria of winning trades when money flows in like magic, and the confusion and shock that result from unanticipated losses. There are many reactions to these losses: cut them quickly, ride out the storm, even double up the bets. Each of these sometimes works and sometimes makes the situation worse. Only after reading all the permutations and outcomes can you understand the stark choices posed as the disasters unfold. The players are neither idiots nor geniuses, they are smart but ordinary people, facing understandable human dilemmas.

This context is precisely what is missing in the chapter on engineering disasters. If you look only at disasters, when by definition all the safety precautions failed, it's no surprise that you'll conclude safety precautions are worthless. If you only look at the most dramatic disasters, it's no surprise you'll conclude that the most ambitious, advanced, complex and tightly-coupled systems are the most prone to catastrophe. Bookstaber relies on writers I call the dismal engineers. I think optimists like Duke civil engineering professor Henry Petroski have more to say to financial risk managers. Petroski wrote "no one wants to learn from mistakes, but we can't learn enough from successes to advance the state of the art."

The chapters on biological, mathematical and quantum mechanical limits on rationality are interesting speculations. Bookstaber appears to know, or perhaps to care, more about these fields than about engineering. However even in these cases his thesis is not entirely convincing within the realm of discussion, nor is the analogy he wants to draw to finance compelling. There's another good book (or three) in these ideas, this book gives only a taste of the arguments.

Despite being a very smart guy with a quarter century of experience in cutting-edge trading, Bookstaber cannot overcome the disadvantages of being trained as an economist, especially an MIT economist. In the final analysis, he believes risk is bad. Trading is defended as socially useful when it provides liquidity, when traders exploit pricing discrepancies caused by short-term supply and demand forces. These traders stabilize the market. But at least half of trading is trend-following, which exacerbates pricing discrepancies and sucks up liquidity, destabilizing the market. To a University of Chicago finance guy, these are symmetrical market forces, both good. Bookstaber correctly points out how financially-supplied liquidity ushered in the Industrial Revolution by converting frozen wealth to dynamic capital. But he doesn't mention the momentum traders who forced prices quickly to their eventual equilibrium, sweeping aside those who try to stand in the way of progress. This is the creative destruction of capitalism. Economists are comfortable with the markets facilitating real economic decisions, spreading the inherent risk among willing investors. They are less comfortable with the market forcing real economic decisions, creating virtual risk and imposing it upon unwilling actors.

This anti-risk bias shows in the account of Tulipmania and the reflexive comparison of financial disaster to engineering disasters. No one died at Long-Term Capital Management. It's true that some financial crises, like the 1997 Asian Crisis, impose human costs, but financial crises are virtual, and therefore less harmful than the same degree of failure with physical economic experimentation, and far, far less harmful than the retarded progress if experimentation is slowed. Bookstaber celebrates the liquidity provided by a shrewd swimsuit retailer who anticipates fashion and supplies her customers' demand without excessive price increases. Nowhere does he mention the businesses that create fads, including swimsuit fashions, and thereby the need for liquidity providers. Economists like businesses that respond to exogenous consumer preferences, they have trouble with businesses that manipulate consumer preferences. But both are needed for successful dynamic economies.

None of this takes away from the fact that this is an entertaining and insightful book, essential reading for people interested in financial risk. I disagree with Bookstaber's conclusions calling for slowing market innovation and trading, but I think these are preconceptions from his early training rather than the result of his experiences since.

Treatise + autobiography + payback of former colleagues
By D. C. Carrad
Extremely well-written and thought-provoking. The author has a wide range of interests and knowledge, from yield curve behavior to cockroach survival traits, and explains them all lucidly, simply and in an entertaining and practical manner. He has a deep understanding of the workings of the financial markets, and shares several unique perspectives in this book which I have not read elsewhere, and it is extremely valuable for that reason alone. He is one of those rare geniuses who can keep his autobiographical urge to an interesting, useful and entertaining minimum, only mentioning his personal experiences when they provide insights into larger themes (cf. Black Swans). The author does occasionally use the book as a platform for payback to former colleagues who have done him wrong, but this is done with a stiletto, not a blunderbuss, and is fun to watch. Always well-written, occasionally entertaining. Very highest recommendation.
