As a Korean American, I'm impressed!

Some background: I was born and raised in the States but my parents are immigrants from Korea. I've never been to Korea, and I don't know many Koreans so I never was able to practice it. I speak some Korean, but it's broken at times and super informal.

I've been interested in brushing up on my Korean because there are such large gaps in my knowledge- my mother spoke to me in Korean, but never had the time to teach it, and neither were sure how to explain many of the grammatical rules. Looking back, they were probably too busy trying to learn English!

I've tried a few intermediate books in the past, but none really provided what I needed so I decided to start at the very beginning. This book has been an easy (and surprisingly fun) read :) I'm on chapter 3 and I've learned at least two new things about grammar so far! Great work, Billy!

Good recourse for beginners

I'm about half way through the book so far, and I feel like I've used it enough to leave a thoughtful and (hopefully) helpful review. The first thing that you should know is that this probably isn't the best "stand alone" book. It's not a textbook, so it's not going to have everything that you need to learn the language. It IS, however, very helpful for a beginner to gain a lot of basic understanding to the language and how grammar fits Korean sentences together. The information is pretty clearly laid out and is to-the-point. Not a lot of unnecessary confusing topics right off the bat, and then it goes a bit deeper into complex rules later on. It's set up in a format that is really easy for me to follow. I really like this book and will definitely move on to the others as I continue learning the language.

That being said, there are a few things that I would have liked to see, especially in a beginner's book. Some of these are entirely preferential, so if you're okay with these things missing, then that's okay.

Use of a "handwriting" font is extremely confusing. It took about 8 chapters before I felt comfortable reading the Hangul font, and I was often copying down the WRONG spelling due to my complete inability to read that font. I would have liked to see the first chapter or two have both the typical font and the handwriting font for all the words in order to better familiarize the differences between the two fonts. Only occasionally in later chapters are new concepts introduced with the cleaner font, but most new words are in the handwriting font.

Though there are audio files available on the site (which are very useful), they are only of the conversations. This is good for listening practice, but there are a lot of new words introduced in each chapter and (especially as a beginner), you kind of have to guess at what they sound like. There's an in-depth Appendix on pronunciation rules, but very few people will read and retain all the rules, and you often find yourself learning a mispronunciation and can't identify the word if you hear it elsewhere. It'd be nice if on vocab words that have special pronunciation, if there was a bit of a reminder "hey, this looks like this, but is pronounced like this!"

Not enough repetition. Again, totally preferential, but I find myself diligently taking notes through out a chapter, do the 6-10 lines of practice at the end, and then moving on to the next chapter without realizing I'm not ready due to a lack of real structure in the chapter's end. There are lists and lists and lists of vocab words, most of which were not used in the chapter. It'd just be nice to see a bit more repetition, a bit more "work" in order to drive home concepts that were taught during a chapter.

Even with these minor flaws, I still find this to be a helpful book, and I recommend it to anyone learning Korean. It's a valuable source of information and the narration style is comfortable, easy to read (not like a dry textbook).

Edit after finishing the book:
Of all the resources that I've been using for learning the language, this one is definitely my favorite. It explains things pretty well and gives you a bit of cultural insight. Right now I'm just going through again to review each chapter. There are a few things that I'd already forgotten, but the rest of it is really sticking with me. I already purchased the second book, and I'll definitely get the third later on. I'm updating my review from 4 stars to 5 stars. Thanks!

Best Beginner's Korean Book I have found!

I have been learning foreign languages for many many years - and Korean is one of my favorites. I have bought just about every book on the subject known to the English Speaking World. This book is by far the best for beginners. The vocabulary is very relevant to the beginner. The pronunciation and grammar explanations are to the point and very easy to follow. There are practice exercises with an answer key. And there are really great Cultural Notes that are so important when learning a non-european language. And lastly, it complements the author's Youtube video series called "Learn Korean with Go! Billy Korean". So if you really want to learn Korean in a pleasant, easy to follow, and totally beginner friendly course - Buy this Book! I just can't say enough good things about this book!

WELL WORTH the PRICE!

Very clear, concise and important information that gave me the tools to create a basic will and estate plan. Saved me hours and hours of legal fees as it answered so many questions including how to avoid unnecessary legal and probate fees when only one spouse dies. Clarified that issue and that alone was well worth the price of the book. Cuts thru all the legal BS you get from pricey estate planners and attorneys.

Estate Planning Basics is an excellent overview of estate planning

I bought this book after borrowing both this book and NOLO book Planning Your Estate from the library. Estate Planning Basics is an excellent overview of estate planning. It provides enough information to understand the big picture. Have a good idea of what you want to do before you see an attorney. Planning Your Estate goes in to far more detail. This is one of several NOLO books I own. I find them handy, easy to understand, references.

About the Author
Widely considered to be one of the finest American painters of his generation, Brian Rutenberg has spent forty years honing a distinctive method of compressing the rich color and form of his native coastal South Carolina into complex landscape paintings that imbue material reality with a deep sense of place. He is a Fulbright Scholar, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow, a Basil Alkazzi USA Award recipient, an Irish Museum of Modern Art residency programme participant, and he has had over two hundred exhibitions throughout North America and in Europe.  Rutenberg's paintings are in private collections all over the world and are included in such museum collections as the Butler Institute of American Art, Yale University Art Gallery, the Bronx Museum of Arts, Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Peabody Essex Museum of Art, Greenville County Museum of Art, and many others. An intimate journey with a renowned artist

While reading this book I felt I was being led on an intimate journey to the heart of an artist. Mr. Rutenberg shares his life from when he was a very young child walking in the garden with his grandfather where he would put his face in the flowers and absorb the colors, to his current life in New York where he says his favorite walk is through Central Park to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He says he never aspired to be an artist. He started drawing in first grade, painting in fourth, and declared himself an artist at ten. Along with telling his personal story Mr. Rutenberg talks about art and what it means to him to be an artist. He shares such insights as “the key to color is to try everything without scrutiny, just play. You can't think color; you have to see it.” and “Give your work time. It doesn't matter where you got it, only where you take it.”
There is a lot of good, thoughtful information about art within the pages of this book; written by an artist for artists. I recommend this book.

Brian's Story

"Clear Seeing Place: Studio Visits" by Brian Rutenberg is one of the most introspective books I have ever read. Born and raised in the Low Country of coastal South Carolina, he takes us through very specific moments that unveiled the artist within him. Making his way to NYC when he was a bit older, he shares the various trials he faced but from a very down-to-earth, raw perspective. Brian discusses exactly what a painter should and should not think about when it comes to painting. He elaborates about what painting is and is not and compares it to other pieces of art like photography. As someone who hasn't painted beyond an art class assignment, I feel as though his perspective will allow me to look at an art gallery with newfound perspective. I believe that any artist stands a lot to gain from this book; I appreciate the genuine story of his life. I am sure his children will love reading it when they are older too!

Brian Rutenberg is a contemporary artist that hosts a series on YouTube called "Studio Visits." Part autobiographical musings, part art theory, part talking about process, it's like sitting down with a friend for a talk about what it means to make art -- more the stuff of the late night coffeehouse than of the lecture hall. I've been painting for a couple of years and find these talks very motivational. There's a lot out there about how to paint or on art history but insights into a painter's mind are few and far between.

Clear Seeing Place is an extension of the video series. Brian's writing flows and his enthusiasm for art is infectious. I see this book having a permanent place on my painting table for whenever I need inspiration or a kick in the pants. It occupies the same place for me as books like Bayles and Orland's Art and Fear or Joe Fig's Inside the Painter's Studio

How Many Physicians Would Pass The Exam?

Pauline Chen is a surgeon who does liver transplants. She is also a fine writer as FINAL EXAM - A SURGEON'S REFLECTIONS ON MORTALITY proves so well. She writes with both passion and humility about the contradiction she sees in the field of medicine: that doctors, who witness death so often that it should almost become routine essentially are no better at dealing with the end of life than their patients are. (She actually uses the word "dysfunctional" to describe many physicians' attitudes toward death.) She believes there are many reasons for this phenomenon. Doctors are trained to be healers; that is why most of them went to medical school. To lose a patient to death somehow is an admission of failure. Many physicians will continue aggressive but useless therapy for a dying patient to pacify the patient's family. Sometimes they fear litigation or they may continue treatment-- we can only hope occasionally-- for financial gain. But whatever the reasons, they are not good enough. The patient loses, but the physician loses as well the chance to do-- what Chen would call-- "something more than cure" and "nurture our [physicians'] best humanistic tendencies."

Dr. Chen discusses candidly her first experience with death, when she was a sophomore in college, of her maternal grandfaather. Then in medical school she spent 12 weeks with a cadaver: "My very first patient had beeen dead for over a year before I laid hands on her." She writes about her first patient to die and her inability to contact a dying friend. She confronts her fears about her own mortality when she is about to harvest organs (a procedure she had done eighty-two times previously) from an automobile accident victim and discovers that the donor is a brain-dead thirty-five-year old Asian American woman: "For a moment I saw a reflection of my own life and I felt as if I were pulling apart my own flesh."

This beautifully written book reminded me of another fine book by another physician, Abraham Verghese's MY OWN COUNTRY, an account of his treating the first patients-- most of whom would certainly die horrible deaths-- with HIV/AIDS at the local VA hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee in the 1980's. Both these books should be required reading for medical students.

When I finished Dr. Chen's "reflections," I thought of (1) how fortunate her patients are to have a surgeon so sensitive and so human and (2) wondered how many physicians would take time out from their busy schedules to read her wise words.

Beautifully written, humbly offered

Starting with her earliest medical training in anatomy with dissection of cadavers, Pauline Chen takes us on a journey into the sacred territory of the human body, and challenges the medical profession's failure to train physicians in the care of the dying. This book should be required for anyone training for the medical profession. As we follow her personal journey to becoming a surgeon specializing in liver transplants, she respectfully acknowledges the "so much that is right" about medical training, but reveals the dilemma of medicine's lack of preparation for the inevitability of death. Her authentic personal narrative offers the challenge to change how the dying should be treated in the professional medical world, in a way that invites soul-searching rather than offering any formulaic responses.

I am not a medical professional, so I was particularly grateful for her "inside the human body" perspectives that amplified my awareness of the wonder and sacredness of the body's deliberate design to succumb to death in a passage as meaningful as birth.

Beautifully written, humbly offered, moving beyond words. Thank you, Dr. Chen.

I highly recommend this book! Dr. Chen's authentic writing, part memior and part thesis, explains the training medical students undergo. She discusses how this training, the culture of medicine and other factors have failed to prepare doctors to communicate with patients and family members about death and dying.

Dr. Chen's book reminded me of the doctor who told a friend to 'put your affairs in order' when she woke up after surgery. That surgeon's total failure to convey news that an expected benign tumor was advanced stage cancer emotionally gutted his groggy patient. Final Exam sheds light on how this highly recommended surgeon could so spectacularly fail to communicate with compassion.

This book is well written and an easy read for the layman. As I finished this book, I recalled the debates about what 'the doctor said' whenever my family had dealt with a terminal diagnosis. I had chalked it up to a mix of stress and different communication styles yet Dr. Chen reminds us that the doctor's ability to communicate is essential.
