This comprehensive listing contains over 7000 Hollywood films containing original songs. The first two volumes list films alphabetically, offering musical and nonmusical cast and credits, and, when appropriate, the composer of the film scores. Often extensive notes are included, with information on song substitutions, deletions, previous song uses in films, and dubbed voices for singers. Straight to video films are not included, nor are public domain songs or songs which simply function as background music in a scene. Almost every genre is covered, including rock films. Volume three has a chronological index of films from 1922 to early 1990, a personnel index, and an index by song title. One quibble: Couldn't this reference set have indicated whether a soundtrack album was ever issued? Although some of this material can be found elsewhere, such as in Leonard Maltin's or Leslie Halliwell's film guides, this reference pulls it all together in one complete and convenient source. This one rates a "thumbs up" for large film and music reference collections.

This comprehensive guide describes 7,000 Hollywood movies for which songs or scores were especially written. It cover all genres, including rock musicals. Many of the films are not musicals but are listed because a theme song was written for them. Some films listed include no songs; for example, a song was written for Psycho but the movie was released without it. Not included are most concert films, which do not usually have original music written especially for them. A notable exception is Woodstock. Bloom is also the author of a similar book on musical theater, American Song: The Complete Musical Theatre Companion (Facts On File, 1985).

Volumes 1 and 2 of this 3-volume work list the films alphabetically by title. Included in each entry is the studio that released the film, year of release, composer, lyricist, choreographer, producer, screenwriter, director, original source on which the film is based, cast (all stars are listed as well as selected character actors and supporting players), and songs. A notes section contains various other information of interest, such as alternative titles, songs that were cut from the picture, songs used instrumentally only, Academy Award winners, etc. Volume 3 lists the films chronologically from 1922 to 1989 (with three titles listed for 1990). It also includes a name index, which notes if the person was a cast member, choreographer, composer, lyricist, etc. A song index enables the reader to find the films for which songs such as "Moon River" (Breakfast at Tiffany's) or "The Power of Love" (Back to the Future) were written.

Several books cover movie musicals. Parish and Pitts' Great Hollywood Musical Pictures [RBB N 1 92], for example, has lengthy descriptions of 340 musicals. The authors note which cast members performed each song, but the book has no song index. Hollywood Song, however, has a much broader scope, covering thousands of films that contain at least one song. This valuable and extensive work will be a good purchase for large film and music collections.

Data on songs from almost 7,000 American and foreign films are included in a heady reference which lists all movies alphabetically, chronologically, and by songs. So much wrong...

I don't mind fluffy throw away books. They can be fun. I can overlook it if the author gets easy spelling and grammar wrong every few pages; retched for wretched or 'do embroider' instead of 'do embroidery'. I can overlook getting the date of an invention wrong if it's not too out of period but easy, daily trans-Atlantic telephone calls thirty years before they were even possible is stretching it. I can gloss over weird name spellings - Hannish? Hamish, Donnel? Donal, Leezil? Lisl or Eliza or Elizabeth maybe… McKenna? Wait! What? McKenna? Why would a Scottish girl in 1899 have an Irish surname for her Christian name? - if they don't constantly drag me out of the story. I like getting a lot of history in my reading but not when it means I have to read the book with an open browser window on a search engine because most of the book is striking me as, "that's not right!" and when I look it up I see the author did get it wrong. I can understand an author being confused by British peerages and title usage, but not when that's a main component of the plot. The frankly ignorant way people are addressed in this book was constant source of irritation. A Duke ought to have at least a passing acquaintance that DeBrett's Peerage *exists* and not think it would be a really good idea if someone came up with a list of legitimate English peers! Obviously stereotyped characters don't usually bother me in this kind of book. Calling the characters in this book 'stereotyped' would be giving them a depth of character they didn't deserve. They are flatter and far less nuanced than merely stereotyped. Simple plots are usually not a deal breaker but so little happened in this novel and what little did happen was telegraphed chapters before. I just had to plod through a lot of words to see the obvious play out. After chapter 5, I just skimmed the rest in about 10 minutes because my eyes were bleeding at the inanity. Any individual flaw would not make the book a bad one. Any two or even three flaws would be OK. This one book had ALL of the flaws and nothing that made reading it a worthwhile use of my time.

Great Summer Read!

If you are looking for a historical romance with fully developed characters, and without graphic sex scenes, you will enjoy Marblestone Mansion. The author does a good job at describing the setting of the story, without overdoing it. Some authors get carried away with descriptive scenes, making you skim over paragraphs. It was a good balance and comfortable read.

I liked how she visualized the story in her mind, and was able to convey the scenes and setting with her words.

I really didn't intend to read the story when I did, as I only had my iPod. But I was bored one afternoon, and started reading it. I got immediately into the story. This is one book in a series, and I am looking forward to reading the next one.

I've read literally hundreds of romances over the years - and this book holds its own with all those traditionally published works. Good Job.

Comfortable, Enjoyable, and senseable

I got this book yesterday, and finished it last night. It had a little of Colorado history, and vivid descriptions of the surroundings, so much so, that I thought I could help them decorate! It was a non-profane, non-smutty love story. I love those and they are hard to find. It seems too many authors think no one has ever had sex before, so they believe it to be their job to describe every single detail of the act. Which I find discusting. I have an imagination...let me use it...
I loved the characters. They were relateable. My heart broke for the Duke, and his horrible choice of a wife. I too, loved Sassy. All the characters just seemed to blend together effortlessly. It is a stress free comfortable read. I also had an overwhelming urge to slap the Duchess! I will continue to the next in this series. Completely enjoyable.

I am very happy to have these two books. Being a teacher and special educator these books are extremely valuable for me. I can further enhance my knowledge and impart the knowledge in the field of education.I am thankful to Dr. Pierangelo and Dr. Giuliani who have taken so much pain to write these wonderful books. For the special educator, this book provides a brief outline of the disabilities that can enter your world. The quick background will assist you in providing the appropriate learning strategies to assist your student. Very helpful to have in the class and should be made available for pre-service special educators when doing those case studies.

The manual is used daily. I love the listings. They are easily understood, Unfortunately, the day I received the manual, it was outdated. Not the fault of the publisher. IT has to be understood that these definitions change all the time.

With the advent of the Industrial Revolution , the biosphere has been continuously polluted with a myriad of contaminants that urgently need global attention. In this perspective, most of the genera of the plant family Brassicaceae (Crucifereae or the mustard family) are significant parts of the plants- and associated microbes-based strategies adopted for the cleanup of varied contaminants from environmental compartments. Important genera such as Alyssum, Arabidopsis, Brassica and Thlaspi from Brassicaceae which, besides acting as attractive genetic models, well-represent the metal hyperaccumulation among approximately 0.2% of all angiosperms and thus, play a key role in the phytoremediation technology. This book i) provides an exhaustive evaluation of the current status of contaminants (metals/metalloids)-addition to varied environmental compartments and its consequences, ii) offers comprehensive and state-of-the-art information on the significance of the plants from the family Brassicaceae in solving environmental pollution issues, iii) examines the physiological, biochemical and molecular-genetic strategies adopted by the plants from Brassicaceae for the remediation of and tolerance to varied environmental contaminants, and iv) supplies a broad reference to the field of environmental science and related disciplines. As a self-described "champion of small uglies," English writer Gerald Durrell (1925-1995) devoted his life to writing and the preservation of wildlife, from the Mauritius pink pigeon to the Rodriques fruit bat. My Family and Other Animals was intended to embrace the natural history of the Greek island of Corfu, but ended up as a delightful account of his family's experiences that were, according to him, "rather like living in one of the more flamboyant and slapstick comic operas."

As a 10-year-old boy, Gerry left England for Corfu with "all those items that I thought necessary to relieve the tedium of a long journey: four books on natural history, a butterfly net, a dog, and a jam-jar full of caterpillars all in imminent danger of turning into chrysalids." Durrell's descriptions of his family and its many eccentric hangers-on (he stresses that "all the anecdotes about the island and the islanders are absolutely true") are highly entertaining, as is the procession of toads, scorpions, geckos, ladybugs, glowworms, octopuses, the puppies Widdle and Puke, and the Magenpies. This is a lovely book.

Gerald Durrell was born in Jamshedpur, India, in 1925. A student of zoology, he founded the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust on the Channel Island of Jersey. His other books include A Zoo in My Luggage and The Whispering Land (both available from Penguin).

Written by the youngest of the Durrell brothers, this gem recreates with fantasy and humor five years of adventure that the family of five (following their early years in India and the death of their father) spent on Corfu before World War II. We see the budding naturalist, who would later become a distinguished figure in animal welfare and conservation as he first discovers, creates and then oversees an idyllic world inhabited by dogs, exotic birds, lizards, snakes and other wildlife. In his escapades young Gerald manages to avoid most formal tutoring and is accompanied by the perfect guide and mentor, an aging Greek father figure who encourages and participates in the mischief that fills these pages. The romps are at times outrageous and past the edge of credibility. But no matter; the fun is shared by all--except for the more famous and judgmental eldest brother, and barely noticed by their sweetly indulgent if also clueless mother. The short chapter called "The Rose-Beetle Man" contains one of the most beguiling and delightful creations to be found anywhere in early 20th century literature.

Corfu Trilogy - a Treat for your literary sense

These stories are incredible and because of them i traveled to Greece four times and painted for weeks on end. The books were written in the 50s, and i thought when i went in the 80s that the people would be different, but they were as he described in the three stories of living on Corfu. The food and music were also as he described . I am collecting first editions of Durrells's books if they have any story about that time just before WWII., for my library and i have introduced his writing to many other people.

Small book but immensely wonderful story

This is one of my all time favorite books. However I was unhappily surprised by the small size of the book and the number of typos. Perhaps I missed the size description when shopping but the typos are inexcusable. All that said I am happy to own a new copy that should last the many re-readings to come.
