Introduction

When it comes to naming the kitchen tool of the millennium, my vote goes to the new generation of safe and foolproof pressure cookers.

I am a kitchen gadget junkie, but few of my new acquisitions fully deliver on their promises, and many are relegated to the culinary scrapheap. So when the best kitchen stores began carrying a reportedly foolproof new generation of the old 1950s wonder, the pressure cooker, I was skeptical. I'd heard the horror stories -- erupting pots of pea soup and rocketing valves. Who needs to risk life and limb to cook dinner?

But professional curiosity got the better of me. The new pressure cookers are lovely, sleek and shiny stainless steel pots with heavy bottoms and loads of safety devices. Gone is the hissing pressure regulator, bouncing precariously on a jet of steam. In its place, most modern machines have a new regulator and quick-release valve that lets you release the steam instantly, without hauling the hot and heavy monster over to the cold-water tap to cool it down. They have more backup safety mechanisms, so you can't build pressure if the lid isn't properly affixed, or inadvertently clog the main pressure vent and end up with lima beans all over the ceiling.

There really is nothing to fear from this new generation of safe pressure cookers. But that wasn't what hooked me. It was the food. Hands-free risotto, cooked to creamy perfection in 6 minutes. The house filled with the heady aromas of tender beef and red wine stew in half an hour. Almost instant homemade stocks and broths, with all of the infused flavor you'd expect from hours of slow cooking.

Suddenly, I could make healthy meals reminiscent of my grandmother's kitchen in less time than I could sauté a chicken breast.

This is what really makes the pressure cooker indispensable. It's not for all kinds of cooking, but it's a tool that can save you time and energy without compromising quality.

We are eating more beans and whole grains -- ethnic dishes like Indian curries and Mexican black bean soup on Wednesdays or daube of lamb with niçoise olives and succulent short ribs for dinner parties. This kind of old-fashioned peasant food is back in style, and that's where the pressure cooker shines. So think about savory stew, coq au vin, or rogan josh tonight. Have a healthy grain pilaf with your grilled fish, or simmer a big pot of bean soup for lunch in less than 15 minutes.

Crystal clear recipes, exotic dishes and delicious results

This is my favorite of all the pressure cooker books I own, especially for exotic dishes. Cinda Chavich's recipes are clear, mise-en-place orderly and precise. Ingredient measurements are also offered in metric units. Steps are laid out in an easy-to-follow way that will delight beginners and experienced cooks. Most recipes fit on one page max and most involve only 3 to 5 cooking steps.

The title says it all as these really are some of the best recipes you'll find for the pressure cooker. While many tasty basic dishes are here, this is not a recipe book for the timid diner or a poorly stocked kitchen. Chavich works miracles with exotic spices and ingredients that even a novice pressure cook can easily learn to master - cardamom, garam masala, chili and curry pastes, coconut milk and more. The recipes take inspiration from North African, Mediterranean, pan-Asian, Latin American and other world cuisines with incredibly delicious results. Best of all, every recipe I've tried has been easy to prepare and fuss-free. Ms. Chavich put her skills as a journalist and food editor to good use, giving us a recipe book that's written with uncommon clarity.

The book includes many basic recipes for perfect pot roast, hummus, Sloppy Joe's, roast chicken, stews and fantastic vegetarian dishes that are healthful, easy and full of flavor. A section on beans and grains offers 29 can't-wait-to-try recipes that range from basic risotto to paella and wheat berries carbonara.

Not only can this woman cook, she can teach too as every section and recipe is accompanied by tips or serving/shopping suggestions. No garbage ingredients here, either - everything screams fresh and fantastic, including desserts from orange espresso cheesecake to lemony lavender creams.

The few pages of introductory text and cooking time tables are probably adequate for the beginner, though a PC novice will also want to absorb Lorna Sass' instructions and pressure cooking basics. As a decent home cook who's only been using a Kuhn Rikon (excellent!) pressure cooker for a few months, I found Chavich's tips and recipes more than adequate to follow and master on first try. Last night's curried chicken thighs with (whole wheat) couscous was a total home run, a one-pot dish/one-bowl meal that was fragrant, satisfying and full of low-fat nutrients. Seconds went to both a meat-and-potatoes diner and a professional chef at the table.

Get this book. The recipes are almost too good to be true. Every one I've tried has turned out restaurant-quality perfection. Whether you try basic or the more adventuresome world-cuisine dishes, you'll be amazed at how Chavich's book will make it a breeze and a pleasure for you to whip up some of the most sophisticated, delicious and unusual meals in your pressure cooker.

Good cook book

I recently purchased my first pressure cooker and was looking for a good cookbook to go along with it. I purchased this book and The Everything Pressure Cooker book.
The recipes I have tried so far have been good and the layout and basic information in the book are very good. The recipes are easy to read and follow and there are a good set of general cooking tables in the beginning of the book.
The only thing I did not like about it, and it is mostly personal tastes, is that there are a lot of ethnic recipes, most of which I would not cook. I also found some of the recipes a bit fussy or with ingredients that I would not ordinarily have on hand. If you like a more diverse range of foods or have time for fancier fare than this book would be good fit. Overall I'm happy with the purchase and find it a good book for pressure cooker recipes.

Tasty, Interesting Recipes Including Vegetarian!

This is probably the best pressure cooker recipe book I've found for my needs. I'm a vegetarian, and I prefer foods that have lots of flavor. This book offers 34 pages of 'Vegetarian Dishes' in addition to others in the 'Appetizers,' 'Soups', and 'Beans and Grains' sections. The recipes include Mediterranean, Caribbean, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, TexMex and Indian flavors and are anything but bland. I bought a book of pressure cooker recipes for vegetarians, but the recipes were for the most part quite dull.

If you're a meat & fish lover, there are 48 main dish 'Meat' pages, 26 'Poultry' pages and 18 'Fish' pages. I imagine these recipes are as creative and tasty as the vegetarian ones. There are also recipes for puddings, jams, cakes and sauces. I haven't tried the desserts, since I've had to give up sweets.

The definitive resource for collectors of RPG's bar none

This book has it all for collectors of RPG material from the earliest days to 1990. One can only hope that a sequel can be published eventually that would cover 1991-present. The book is divided into sections of role-playing based on genre. Each item has a general description followed by how many different editions were published, how many pages, any inserts and other pertinent information. There are also special notes on special collectable items and quotes from many of the original designers themselves on their creations and how they were created. This book really contains just about every RPG product ever published, even the small press items that are impossible to come by. The author really knows his area and did his homework. This book is sine qua non for the RPG collector. Absolutely superb!

The best history of gaming ever

I began role-playing in the late seventies, when all of the earliest role-playing games were still available for sale. Reading "Heroic Worlds" is like returning to those early days, both in its comprehensive listing of every role-playing game release available up through 1990, and in its evocation of the state of the art of role-playing games in its early days. This book is bound to be a classic for a number of reasons: one, it's the only place that will serve the collector hoping to buy every single supplement for their favorite game; two, it's the best history available on the subject, even today; and three, it will serve the game designers of the future, in seeing what has already been done, and what still remains to be done. It's a wonderful read, as well. Now all we need is a second edition, that updates the subject to the present day!

THIS IS A BOOK FOR PEOPLE AT ALL LEVELS - LAYMAN, COMPOSER, OR ADVANCED MUSIC LOVER. "Why should one have to learn or need guidance on how to listen to what one is hearing?" is the question that William Schuman asks in his Preface. "The answer is simple. Listening to music is a skill that is acquired through experience and learning. Knowledge enhances enjoyment."
What makes What to Listen for in Music so invaluable is that it is the ONLY book on musical appreciation written by a GREAT COMPOSER. "This is a composer's book," Aaron Copland states. "Given the chance, every composer would like to know two very important things about anyone who takes himself seriously as a music lover...1. Are you hearing everything that is going on? [and] 2. Are you really being sensitive to it?"
The only shortcoming of this book is that it should be taken as part of a class to make sure that one gets everything out of it. It would be great if it came with a CD of all the examples to which Copland makes reference. However, each chapter does end with a list of "recommended listening." To make specific points, Copland does include sheet music (but I didn't read this book sitting next to my piano). However, these problems are minimal, considering we live in an age of the cheap CDs and music downloads.
Copland covers EVERY aspect of music, starting with "how we listen," - on the sensuous plane, the expressive plane, and the sheerly musical plane. He then goes on to explain to us the Four Elements of Music - Melody, Rhythm, Harmony, and Tone Color. We find out about all the musical instruments, their history and classifications. We find out about all the genres in music - Sectional Form, Variation Form, Fugal Form, Sonata Form, Free Form. Did you know that Sonata Form includes symphonies as well? And that symphonies grew out of operatic overtures?
This is a book that bears re-reading. A lot of technical jargon gets bandied about and, although Copland does his best to explain it all, it still gets a tad confusing. I advise reading this book, listening to a LOT of music, and then reading it again. I know my own knowledge and appreciation of music has grown from reading it. Now I DO have an idea of the nuances I should be listening for in a Mozart piano concerto.

A good introduction to classical music

Given the complexity of classical music, it is not surprising that many people find it confusing and intimidating. With all those terms like "sonata-allegro form" and "contrapuntal texture", it's easy to feel intimidated when trying to make sense of an hour long symphony. Fortunately, Aaron Copland does a good job explaining the basics of how music is structured.

This book covers music, specifically classical music, from several different angles. These include the sensual, expressive, and musical aspects, but also the way elements like rhythm, harmony, and melody interact to form music. Copland also covers musical texture from simple unaccompanied melodies to the complexities of counterpoint.

Copland also gives a basic overview of the history of classical music and how it evolved from unaccompanied religious chants to organum to counterpoint and accompanied melodies. He also mentions how composers do their work and his perspectives and experiences with composition.

On the negative side, the book is very dated, to say the least, refering to 30s era records and "the rhythm-based music of savage tribesmen". However, that shouldn't stop

Important considerations when evaluating the usefulness of this book.

As many other reviewers have noted, this is the only book on the market that is produced by ETS, the company that writes and administers the GRE; however, please know that this does not mean that buying this book is a no-brainer. Far from it. The book may be helpful to you in some respects, but I would never recommend purchasing only it to study for the GRE. I would buy it perhaps as a supplement to a book published by a third-party (like Barron's, the Princeton Review, Kaplan, etc) or not at all. These third party books really are likely to serve you FAR better, as I will try to explain. Here are the things I think you should consider as you decide whether to purchase this book:

1) The majority of the practice questions in this book are available for FREE on the ETS website. Just check out their "Prepare for the GRE" page for pdfs.
2) The POWERPREP II software (including two practice tests) which is contained on the disc accompanying this book is also available for FREE on the ETS website. Just check out their "Prepare for the GRE" page for a download.
3) Whether you go with the book or get it online, the POWERPREP II software is Windows/IE-compatible only. (Ridiculous.)
4) The Math Review section of this book is also available for FREE on the ETS website. Just check out their "Prepare for the GRE" page for a download.
5) Many of the other explanations and general tips contained in the book are also included in the free online materials (I think it's called the Practice Book) on the ETS website.
6) All that said, if you prefer to work on paper rather than on a PDF, and you don't want to print out a giant stack of pages, you may like the idea of having ETS' materials nicely printed and bound as they are in this book.
7) One nice thing about the fact that this book was written by ETS is that you get actual old GRE questions. ETS doesn't license its old questions, so all other books will have questions meant to closely approximate authentic GRE questions, but which never actually appeared on a GRE exam. However, since you can get most of these ETS-authentic practice questions for free, as I've explained, you still may not want to spend on this book. Plus, the questions that third-parties write are, for the most part, similar enough to real GRE questions to still be very good practice.
8) The down side (and I think you should think about this carefully) to this being written by ETS is that it, naturally, sells the "ETS-Kool-Aid" - HARD. What I mean is that other third-parties will shoot you straight because they are not invested in promoting the mystique of this exam. They will tell you, for example, the true fact that the GRE really measures your ability to do well on the GRE, whereas ETS' book will claim, as ETS of course must, that the GRE is predictive of your success in graduate school. In addition, third-party books will level with you about how the GRE is written and how it is graded and will teach you tips, tricks, techniques, and work-arounds for the GRE. ETS has to take itself and its exam very, very seriously, which is likely to just scare you and stress you out. Third-parties will level with you. (See also the next point.)
9) (This is to some degree an extension of the previous point.) The Math Review that the ETS has written (recall it is also available for free online) is very misleading in some ways. Firstly, it can be confusingly-presented for those dusting off old, unused math skills. Third-party prep books will serve you far better in explaining these concepts simply, although if you need help with very basic concepts (like long division), you may want to supplement with something like Princeton Review's Math Smart I (or maybe check out tutorials online if you want to save money). Secondly, there are some math topics covered by ETS in their materials that you are simply very unlikely to see on the actual GRE; seeing them in this book will just make you anxious. You do not need to master all the math ETS gives you in this book in order to get a great score on the math portion of the GRE (after all, you can still score in the 99th percentile of test-takers even if you get a few questions wrong on the test). ETS will make it sound like you must know inside and out all the math they give you in this book, but third-party books will be much more honest with you about which concepts you actually need to master, what short-hand tips and tricks you can use, what things you may just want to memorize outright, and what minimum understandings you can totally get by with on some of the trickier math topics that might come up on the GRE.
10) Only third-party books give you actual lists of vocab words that are the most likely to appear on the GRE. This book does not. These lists are very useful in studying for the GRE.

Some final thoughts. No book will guarantee you an awesome score on an exam. I suspect many poor reviews of various test-prep books on Amazon are likely just sour grapes. The truth, in my opinion, is that major third-party prep books are probably roughly equivalent in getting you familiar with, giving you good tips for, and getting you some practice on GRE questions. You have enough to worry about without stressing over which book to choose! Just pick up one of the major third-party books and let it be your primary study guide. Get this book, if at all, only as a supplement.

Unrealistic expectations from the reader

To make this review short I will just say that if you are an individual such as myself, who has struggled with math since grade school and are now trying to learn enough math to get a humble score on the GRE this is not the book you should be purchasing. This book assumes that you already have a decent understanding of mathematical concepts in Geometry, Algebra, and Statistics. For those of us who are majoring in social sciences or another non math related field this book will feel like it is skimming through weeks worth of math concepts on every single page.

I found it to be utterly impossible to understand many of the ideas presented in the book due to the cluttering of these concepts and marginal explanation of how they work together. I found the Princeton Review book to be much more organized and easy to follow due to my severe math deficiencies. The Princeton review does not attempt to teach you 3 years of math by giving you a extremely condensed and limited version of concepts that you barely understood the first time around. Instead its focus is on helping you simply get through the GRE. This book does not even allow you to look at the answer choices in the practice problems as A,B,C,D,E as you would have them on the GRE so it forces you to do the problems their way without actually providing you with enough explanation to understand those problems in the first place. The Princeton review embraces the idea of turning a hard algebra problem into a simple arithmetic problem by plugging in, this book does not even mention this invaluable strategy! Nor does it let you apply it because as stated previously, it does not provide you with A,B,C,D,E answer choices!

If you are someone who has done well in math in the past and just need a refresher for the GRE I recommend this book for you however, if you are like myself, an individual who has struggled with math since elementary school, avidly avoided math in college, and are now trying to pursue a graduate education in your (non math related) field then I would highly advice you to look into both the Princeton review and the GRE for Dummies 7th Edition books. Although not perfect they are much easier to understand for those of us who are dreadful at math.

The ETS Does It Again! Sort of. Ok not really.

As you likely know from either the title or familiarity with the ETS, this book is the Official Guide for the GRE General Test (Revised). I teach the GRE full-time and this is one of two books I require my students to purchase for two primary reasons. This is the only book made by the test-makers, so there is an extraordinarily amount of useful information here: the questions are phrased in the way that the real test phrases them, the content is fairly reflective of the real exam, and the book itself now comes with 2 paper-based and 2 computer-based versions of the test. So, in total, there are hundreds of questions to try your hand at. Secondly, each question comes with a very lengthy explanation as to why certain answers are right and often enough, why other answers are wrong.

The ETS is also kind enough to identify which questions are of what difficulty level, so you can even mark your own progress fairly well, too.

The book further comes with examples of responses to the Analytical Writing tasks, so you have a very good sense of what the ETS thinks of as "a good essay" and "a bad essay", as well.

The book is, however, fairly lacking on a number of other counts. It is not particularly useful as a stand-alone text and once you've exhausted the questions in the book, there are no other resources to use outside of it from the ETS. Additionally--and most importantly--the book lacks a functionally useful set of questions to really build on basic mathematics skills and takes for granted that test-takers will be able to perform particular operations.

My biggest gripe about the book is it's Quantitative Review (Pages 207-305), in which there are no explanations for sample problems and often, concepts are covered in ways that are actually almost unusable for the test itself. Bizarrely, in spite of the fact that the test consistently features Special Right Triangles (Pythagorean Triplets) and often requires test-takers to simplify radicals, the book makes no mention of either of these basic math concepts. These are two among many others.

Additionally, the test does not often inform students of the most efficient or effective way of working through a problem. They'll give a very accurate description of how to solve math problems in some cases, but not if it's optimal for ideal test-taking. As a prime example, there are right triangle questions featured on almost every version of the GRE and almost all of the right triangles featured have particular properties to them. But, the GRE Guide makes no mention of these properties and test-takers are left to their own devices to either figure them out or work around them in the most inefficient ways.

The book is a sort of oddity, as such: it purports to be the Official Guide of the test but it also seems purposefully left incomplete, as if the test-makers wanted to provide some help in making the test accessible, but not so much help that anyone could effectively study for it using their own materials. The cynical conclusion one might draw from this is that the ETS is heavily invested in maintaining the secrecy and mysteriousness of the test (and is also invested in test-takers re-testing) but they don't want the test to seem unduly unfair.

To improve this product, they should include more practice sets that are divided up by concept (rather than simply by difficulty) and further, they should revamp the math review, which has not changed since the good ole' days of the original GRE Guide (which was originally published over 20 years ago).

About the Author
Sebastian Schütze was a longtime research fellow at the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max Planck Institute for Art History) in Rome. He is a member of the academic board of the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici in Naples, and a corresponding member of the Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften. From 2003 to 2009 he held the Bader Chair in Southern Baroque Art at Queen’s University in Kingston. In 2009 he was appointed Professor of Early Modern Art History at Vienna University.

Too Dark is right!

I just returned from a 2 1/2 week trip to Italy during which time I visited Uffizi, Borghese, San Luigi dei Francesi, Santa Maria del Popolo, Pitti Palace, Pinoteca Capitolina, and the Scuderie dei Quirinale CARAVAGGIO exhibition. So I have personally viewed nearly half of Caravaggio's authenticated works within the past month. And, to confirm the writings of some of the other reviewers, many of the reproduction plates in this book are inaccurately dark. I was disappointed with the cave-like lighting provided at the Quirinale show, but even those tiny halogen bulbs illuminated more of the subtleties of M. Merisi's work than do the reproductions in this book, which was proudly announced as being full of new - and supposedly properly exposed - photographs.

One great mystery lies in the fact that where there are multiple representations of the same work, the brightness levels vary - sometimes greatly - from one photo to the next. In nearly all cases the detail plates (which are full-bleed) are brighter and more accurate than the full-size shots. The smaller photos displaying the Cantarelli Chapel at San Luigi more faithfully reproduce the colors of the St. Matthew trilogy than do the dedicated full-page plates. I have little technical knowledge of the printing process, but it seems to me that those who do this for a living (especially at this book's price-point!) would know how to calibrate their devices, publishing software and inks to produce a finished product of consistent tone and luminance.

A couple of other quibbles:

1. The book is divided into two major sections: The first, on heavy glossy stock, combines the more 'free-form' essays which put Caravaggio's paintings into context with his life, his contemporaries, and his influences, with the full-size and detail plates accompanied by smaller reproductions of mentioned works by other artists. But as you read, the plates run farther and farther ahead of the text, so the words on page 115 might describe a work reproduced on page 138. Considering the amount of blank space on some of the pages, the design team at Taschen might have considered a layout whereby the reader could view the plate and read the relevant text without sticking multiple fingers of both hands between the pages to hold his place. The second section, on a matte stock, contains the catalogue, which, while focusing more on provenance, still ends up containing significant redundancies with the essays.

2. While nearly all of the horizontally-oriented works are treated to spread-size reproductions (16" x 24" minus margins), all of the vertically-oriented works are displayed on single pages with margins (for example The Seven Acts Of Mercy is 8 5/8" x 13"). Since the size and weight of the book obviate the need for viewing it on a table rather than in the lap, a few larger representations of vertical works which required the rotation of the book would have been a nice addition.

FYI, there are three tri-fold full-bleed details: The Calling Of St Matthew, The Seven Acts Of Mercy, and the Borghese St Jerome Writing).

I await the delivery of a used copy of the Puglisi book, as well as the reissue of the Spike; perhaps between those three and my Quirinale exhibition catalogue I will acquire a complete set of Caravaggio reproductions of the highest quality.

One of the very best Caravaggio art books.

Caravaggio ( 1571-1610 ) was an Italian painter of the Baroque movement renowned for his bold and masterful use of light and darkness ( Chiaroscuro ) to create dramatic compositions.

This art book by Taschen is a splendid reproduction of the now out of print deluxe edition Caravaggio: The Complete Works, first published in 2009. Although slightly smaller in print size than the original edition, the book is still a hefty volume and comes at a much lower price tag, making it a great value purchase for a very comprehensive collection of Caravaggio's works.

The huge prints of Caravaggio's paintings are beautifully and faithfully reproduced in the book, and the page count and content is identical to the original edition.

There are many Caravaggio art books out there, but this is one the best. Taschen has created a book of exceptional value and quality, and this gets my highest recommendations.

Physical exam for this aesthetics-with brains-with brawn champion

The subtitle is actually The Complete Works rather than ...Paintings. Page count is 306, not 480.

In black boards with gold lettering, and a beautiful jacket of the head of Judith exemplifying the stunning dimensions of the masterpieces and details within.

The book opens with six spreads picturing six head details. The book is printed and sewed (in Italy) with state of the art tolerances and lies flat, but occasionally of course threads or a razor thin line is visible in the center of a spread spanned by an art piece.

Paintings 68-89 are accepted by some Caravaggio scholars but should be regarded as copies or imitations by other hands; this category includes also potentially autograph works whose appraisal is impaired, for example by their poor state of preservation (nor can absolute chronology be established).

The long ribbon attached to the book as place marker does leave an indentation on the page it touches during tight storage.

Kristal, your average nineteen year old, had lost her mother at an early age. Wild, rebellious and flaunting a great body, she has to try everything at least once; drugs, alcohol, and tons of sex. Thinking she is fooling her strict and dominant father, she goes so far as to have an affair with an older woman whom she looks to for motherly advice.

Unfortunately for Kristal, her father knows all after having her spied on by private investigators. After months of conversations, renovations and planning, he informs Kristal they are moving out to the country. She is devastated by the news, but is definitely not prepared for what comes next.

When arriving at the new estate, Kristal is introduced to Frau Baxter, her new governess. At dinner, it is explained to her that though she is nineteen, she is to be fiercely disciplined by the domineering woman. Kristal finds herself very drowsy after dinner and lets Frau Baxter lead her to her rooms for sleep. Groggily the next morning, she wakes to find she has been completely bound to her bed by her wrists, neck and ankles. Shrieking and sobbing, Kristal is inconsolable. The worst, however, is when Frau Baxter explains that this is indeed part of her “correction” and she is now completely under her control.

After a harrowing first day, where she is stripped of all hair, force fed a gluey mush substance, is encased in her Initial Training Ensemble and sent to the “Contemplation Chamber”, Kristal is frantic and cannot understand why her father would do this to her. Little does she know that this first part will be the easiest.

With a true gift for description, JG Leathers is able to make you feel as though the reader is the one encased in rubber, bound in cuffs, pierced in multiple places, and desperate to escape.

A little boring

I am a huge fan of jg leathers writing, perverted as it may be. But this book was disappointing, probably because he ran out of fresh ideas, but he pretty much covered everything in his other books. This book focused too much on the same subject mainly her discipline in her bondage outfit over and over. For me his two books, Controlling Christine one and two are his best. Skip this one and read the other two, you won't be disappointed.

The beginning part was okay, but towards the end it got kind of repetitious and monotonous, and extremely unbelievable. Granted, these stories all require some suspension of belief, but the end of this story was pushing it.
