Between Light and Shadow: An Exploration of the Fiction of Gene Wolfe, 1951 to 1986, by Marc Aramini

Between Light and Shadow is the first volume in a two-volume analysis of Gene Wolf's literary works and takes a comprehensive look at Wolfe's astonishing body of work from 1951 to 1986. Wolfe is famous for creating labyrinthine and complicated stories full of allusions that are not always easily understood; Between Light and Shadow explores every short story and novel that Wolfe composed in the first half of his career.

Between Light and Shadow is not only a holistic illustration of Wolfe's work, but attempts to solve many of the narrative mysteries that have eluded readers for decades. From focused essays interpreting masterpieces such as "The Fifth Head of Cerberus" and "Peace" to complete story analyses which not only delineate allusions and themes but also take a rigorous, logical approach to reading Wolfe, the book is above all an enormous commitment to understanding the work of one of modern literature's most unique and challenging figures.

Between Light and Shadow presents the thesis that objective closure is possible in even Wolfe's most complicated cosmological and metaphysical narratives, and reveals that the mysteries behind the ideas and images inspiring Wolfe are ultimately comprehensible.

An indispensable addition to the Gene Wolfe collection.
By wyatt logan
An incredibly insightful look into the works of Gene Wolfe. An apparently large amount of study must have been undertaken to write this informative and detailed work. If you are a fan of Gene Wolfe, this is an essential addition to your compilation. I look forward to more literary excellence from Marc Aramini in the future.

A prodigious study of SFF’s most elusive writer
By mowry4875
Gene Wolfe is frequently described as one of the most brilliant SFF writers in the genre by critics, authors, and readers alike. Some fans prize his books above all others, and there is a WolfeWiki page dedicated to discussing his work. But there are also many SFF readers that are baffled and frustrated by his stories because they are packed with metaphors, literary references, and hidden themes, and require extremely close reading to understand and appreciate.

When the 2016 Hugo Awards were announced, Marc Aramini’s Between Light and Shadow: An Exploration of the Fiction of Gene Wolfe, 1951 to 1986 was the runner-up in the Best Related Work category. It’s an 826-page analysis covering Wolfe’s output through 1986, including all of his short stories (no matter how obscure, including his earliest works) along with his novels The Fifth Head of Cerberus, Peace, Free Live Free, and The Book of the New Sun. It is truly a work of dedication, a painstaking analysis of symbols, names, literary references, and themes of each story, and yet clearly the work of a fan rather than a dry scholarly study.

Each review in Between Light and Shadow contains a summary of the story, commentary on its themes, literary allusions, significance of character names, unanswered questions (there always are, even after exhaustive analysis), and connections with other works. Aramini even includes bibliographies that reference sources as wide-ranging as the Urth Mailing List, the Bible, The Wizard of Oz, The Arabian Nights, John Milton’s Paradise Lost, Goethe’s Faust, Virginia Woolf, Charles Dickens, Marcel Proust, Gerard Manly Hopkins, Edgar Allan Poe, James Branch Cabell, Gore Vidal, along with scholarly works about Wolfe like Michael Andre-Druissi’s Lexicon Urthus, Robert Borki’s Solar Labyrinth: Exploring Gene Wolfe’s “Book of the New Sun,” and Peter Wright’s Attending Daedalus: Gene Wolfe, Artifice and the Reader.

What this suggests is the incredible depth of literary knowledge Wolfe brings to his stories. It’s hard to imagine even the most well-read literature professor or critic catching most of Wolfe’s oblique references, so it’s incredible the amount of research and analysis that Aramini has done, of course with the assistance of the other contributors to the Urth Mailing List. I’m sure many of these insights came after years of discussions on the meaning of his stories. I wonder just how many of these references most of Wolfe’s fans pick up on.

What’s equally impressive about Between Light and Shadow is that he brings this level of attention to every single story Wolfe has written between 1951 – 1986. The early stories, in particular, I didn’t even know existed. Aramini has indicated he plans a second volume to discuss more recent works like The Book of the Long Sun, The Book of the Short Sun, Latro in the Mist, The Wizard Knight, etc. It’s the effort of a lifetime, and deserves to be read by anyone with an interest in Wolfe’s body of work.

Below I’ve listed some of Wolfe’s most notable stories that would be a good entry point if you want to give Wolfe a try. I gained great insight into them from the analysis of Aramini, a truly dedicated Wolfe scholar and fan. He also has a series of YouTube videos explaining Wolfe’s major works. If you think you might be interested in Between Light and Shadow, perhaps you can listen to some of Aramini’s YouTube videos first to get an idea of his erudition and enthusiasm.

brilliant story
By Steve
This story gripped me from the first word and wouldn't let go. A brilliant idea, beautifully brought to life. I loved seeing Alice and Dorothy in the same room as Inspector Lestrage, and though I admit I haven't read all the original books they come from, actually it didn't matter at all. The familiar concepts interweave with the unfamiliar seamlessly, and that gives the book a similar, though far more sinister, feeling of displaced reality to those upon which it draws. A fitting homage, I think, to those well loved classics. The eponymous Red King is fantastically evil (I always love a well written bad guy!), bloodthirsty and genuinely frightening. The descriptions of both him and his experiences in the world he comes from are vivid and absorbing, and I have to admit I secretly hope to see more of him. Threat, violence and cruelty; hope, innocence and bravery, it's all here. A fast-paced, exhilarating chase through Victorian England. Great fun. Give it a try.

Elegant Writing Style, Realistic Setting Due to Research, and Excellent Concept
By Y. K. Willemse
I would give this review a 4.5 rating for the writing style, although there are parts that I - for ethical reasons - skimmed or skipped. However, the characters were vividly portrayed, and the author has obviously researched nineteenth century London - something that earned my admiration. I've enjoyed Proctor's writing style in the past and was grateful for the opportunity to do it again. I bought the book and don't regret it. The concept behind the story is excellent, and it grabbed my attention immediately. The writing was overall clear and elegant, and the author can pen a good murder. On the constructive side of things, it's my belief that Alice could have been a more active character in determining her fate, although an author can get away with this in the first book of a series. Otherwise, I found it a good read, and will be pleased to purchase more of Proctor's work in the future.

A dark and sinister novel that was a fantastic read!
By Paul R. Hetzer
The Red King was a fully enjoyable read. So much so that I didn't want it to be over when I got to the end. Mr. Proctor describes 19th century London so well that it creates a visually stimulating picture in your mind of what I assume it was actually like in that time period. The story is filled with well-developed characters that you become invested in throughout the novel. It is a dark murderous tale; well thought out and imaginative, an intriguing tale to say the least. The writing is top-notch and expertly flows from chapter one until the end.

Anyone interested in a well-written supernatural thrillers will thoroughly enjoy this book!

It explores analytically and critically American cultural life, the developing urbanization between 1840 and the 1880s, and some major patterns within that movement, through the prism of the career and doings of P.T. Not Enough Humbug!
By Randall L. Wilson
P.T. Barnum's work was his life. He wasn't an artist and had no spectacular talent except to be able see it in others, exploit and publicize it. He was both a subversive and Victorian, a phony and a realist, a humbug and an exposer of it. From our perspective we most want to know how he did he do it? The moralizing and actual exploits are less interesting than are his techniques which are very relevant today.

"Humbug" Neil Harris's biography of the early seventies isn't so concerned with how and more with the what. We learn that he got his start with an outright hoax, the Joice Heth affair in which he bought as an act a slave woman who claimed to have been George Washington's nurse and 161 years old. We do learn the maxim, even bad publicity is good publicity when he encouraged people to challenge her authenticity. He may have done more than encouraged it, he may have created the challenge.

He goes on to form the American Museum which was more like a circus than a Guggenheim or Smithsonian. And he ends his life with the Barnum Bailey three ring circus built upon his concept of the American museum. There was the finding and promotion of Tom Thumb, the huge and lucrative success he created for Jenny Lind the famed opera singer and for Jumbo the elephant.

One tale from the book suggests its frustration. We are told that Barnum was responsible for getting tens of thousands of people to greet Jenny Lind at her arrival in America. This attention was critical for stoking the excitement upon which her success depended. Yet we learn little about what Barnum actually did to attract such a crowd. This is important because people didn't show up simply for the love of Jenny Lind since most people didn't have a clue who she was. Barnum must have utilized a range of tricks to create that kind of excitement but we learn about none of them.

Overall, the book is a good overview of Barnum's career and provides a small window on the entertainment culture of 19th century America. If someone knows of better and more definitive biography of the great showman please leave me the title in the comments.

Great Overview
By Outlaw Rose
This book gives a great overview of the life and times of P.T. Barnum. It doesn't go too in-depth about any particular parts of his life but does touch on just about everything he did. It's a great entry level book into the world of P.T. Barnum.

Detroit's Cold War: The Origins of Postwar Conservatism (Working Class in American History), by Colleen Doody

Detroit's Cold War locates the roots of American conservatism in a city that was a nexus of labor and industry in postwar America. Drawing on meticulous archival research focusing on Detroit, Colleen Doody shows how conflict over business values and opposition to labor, anticommunism, racial animosity, and religion led to the development of a conservative ethos in the aftermath of World War II. Using Detroit--with its large population of African-American and Catholic immigrant workers, strong union presence, and starkly segregated urban landscape--as a case study, Doody articulates a nuanced understanding of anticommunism during the Red Scare. Looking beyond national politics, she focuses on key debates occurring at the local level among a wide variety of common citizens. In examining this city's social and political fabric, Doody illustrates that domestic anticommunism was a cohesive, multifaceted ideology that arose less from Soviet ideological incursion than from tensions within the American public.

Review
"'Detroit's Cold War,' entertaining for its own literary merit, provides compelling insight into the roots, values, and constituencies of the modern conservative movement."--Walker Mulley, The Hillsdale Collegian

"Detroit's Cold War is an important and well-timed book, particularly in light of the passage of so-called right-to-work legislation in Michigan and other states seen generally seen as more progressive and with a long history of union activism, including Wisconsin and Indiana. Doody's rich historical analysis helps to situate the contemporary mistrust and criticism toward unions, collective action, and the welfare state throughout the USA, but especially in areas such as Detroit that should, in theory, be a haven for left-wing politics." --Bradley Walchuk, Labor Studies Journal

"this book must be taken seriously by researchers of twentieth-century American conservatism. Doody's regional particularism, as well as the class, religious, and racial contours she examines, add welcomed nuance to our understanding of the postwar Right."--Michelle Nickerson, American Historical Review

"Colleen Doody agrees with those scholars who see a contested New Deal liberalism and a powerful conservation before the latter's flowering in the 1970s. Her most important contribution is to show how 'the ideas that became central to this [conservative] movement developed at a grassroots level much earlier.'"--Labour/Le Travail

"[A] well-written, and solidly researched book. Detroil's Cold War is highly recommended. It will be useful in undergraduate courses, and is an important contribution to the emerging scholarship on the rise of conservatism in twentieth century America."--American Catholic Studies

"Detroit's Cold War is a concise, clearly written, and sensibly organized book.  It highlights important trends in the United States that have yet to run their course."--The Michigan Historical Review

"Colleen Doody's insightful study of Cold War Detroit introduces readers to a profoundly conservative political history that maps onto and intersects with the history of labor radicalism in the Motor City."--American Historical Review

"Urban historians and historians of conservatism will. . . value the detailed research on the varied dimensions of anticommunist politics in the heart of a New Deal protégé."--The Journal of American History

"An important and well-timed book.  Doody's rich historical analysis helps to situate the contemporary mistrust and criticism toward unions, collective action, and the welfare state throughout the USA."--Labor Studies Journal

Enlightening
By CiCi
I found Detroit's Cold War to be an illuminating glimpse into the origins of not only modern conservatism, but modern organized labor. As a child of the post-Cold War era, communism was a thing of the past, and my entire experience with politics has been what we now consider the standard liberal vs. conservative system. To learn how recently our modern conservative party developed, and the impetus behind that ideology, was fascinating. I was completely ignorant of the influence the American communist party had on the organization and rise to power of labor unions, as well as how organized labor, civil rights, and anti-communism shaped the burgeoning conservative movement.

Ms. Doody's analysis of how anti-communism, labor relations, civil rights, and religious traditionalism impacted public opinion, served to provide a new framework for my understanding of our current political landscape.

First-rate Modern History
By Ashley
I thoroughly enjoyed DePaul Professor Colleen Doody's "Detroit's Cold War." Using Detroit as a microcosm for the post-war era, the book examines the roots of the modern conservative movement. Doody weaves examples from labor-relations, politics, race and religion to illustrate the origins of many of our current societal conflicts, and she does so in a remarkably engaging way. She has produced a brilliant yet accessible historical work.
