Progress made through the ‘CoMIBBS’ component of HYDRALAB III provides the material for a chapter focussed on guidance, principles and practice for composite modelling. There is detailed consideration of scaling and the degree of relevance of laboratory/physical modelling approaches for specific contexts included in each of the individual chapters. The Guide includes outputs from the workshops and several of the innovative transnational access projects that have been supported within HYDRALAB III, as well as the focussed joint research activities SANDS and CoMIBBS. Its primary purpose is to serve as a shared resource to disseminate the outstanding advances achieved within HYDRALAB III but, even more than this, it is a tribute to the human and institutional collaborations that led to and sustained the research advances, the human relationships that were strengthened and initiated through joint participation in the Programme, and the training opportunities that participation provided to the many young researchers engaged in the projects.

Adult/High School–Many kids with physical, mental, and learning disabilities have ridden the short bus to special-education classes, signaling that they were different, singled out, not normal. Mooney was one of those short bus children who hated school because he was dyslexic and couldn't read until he was 12. In 2003, a few years after he graduated from Brown University, he cowrote a book on learning disabilities and began a career of public speaking on the subject. Then he set out on a journey. He bought an old short bus and traveled from Los Angeles to Maine to Washington and back to L.A., stopping to visit with various people who were also not normal. Along the way, he confronted his own preconceptions and assumptions about people with autism, Down syndrome, deafness and blindness, ADHD, and other so-called disabilities. In this book, he deals with the question of What is normal? As a special education teacher, I was very excited to read this book. As much as we love and accept our students for who they are, its often hard to see and understand life through their eyes. I thought this book may help me do so and provide me with relatable experiences, but it did not live up to my expectations. It was a good story overall ... but was a slow read.

Really, the best way to read The Hobbit

Okay, so I say that this is the best way to read The Hobbit. And I am dead serious.
I know that annotated books can be difficult to navigate, filled with useless, pointless, or just plain boring information, and can be grossly oversized. That is not the case here.
So - here's the scoop.
The original story is very nicely presented, with all original illustrations in color when possible, and in black and white elsewhere. The type is nice and clear, very easy to read. (Many cheaper editions are also rather hard on the eyes. Check the print before you buy, folks!)
The illustrations are printed very clearly, and with very good notes on what they are.
And then the annotations - useful, engaging, and very well done. You will WANT to read these. We discover how the book was written, and what was changed between editions. (There were many changes made so that The Hobbit would conform more easily to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.) There are fascinating tidbits about Tolkien's life and the experiences that made their way into the story.
The forward tells about the writing of the novel, and the appedices give additional details about the text.
There are also many illustrations from other editions of the book. These are varied, from thought-provoking to not-provoking.
And the book is not too big. Some editions are simply too big to be read, but this book is reasonably sized so that you can actually READ IT! In fact, I have not read any other edition of The Hobbit for years, since the original annotated version came out.
The new edition is very much worthwhile. Enjoy!

The Hobbit Jemima Catlin

I just wanted to take the time to update anyone who is interested in purchasing this illustrated edition of The Hobbit. As you probably know, there aren't many illustrated editions of the hobbit and most that are illustrated aren't all that incredible. So far, my favorite edition has been the one by Alan Lee. I must say, it's hard to top his work. Alan Lee really helped bring the story to life for me when I first read this incredible adventure by Tolkien. However, because I believe that The Hobbit is a tale directed at the hearts of children and adults that are young at heart, I believe that Jemima Catlin's illustrated edition has topped even the great Alan Lee's. First off, the quality of this book is excellent. The book has been wrapped in cloth so the book feels high quality and soft to the touch. Also, the cover has a beautiful illustration from the book that includes carefully placed gold etching on the leaves, title, and author's name. This really gives the book a nice luster and shine. The book doesn't come with a book jacket and honestly I think that was smart based off of how high quality the book feels and looks. It just doesn't need a cheap paper jacket to cover such a beautiful looking book.

The illustrations that are presented in the book are a thing of beauty. Not only are there a great many (every two or three pages or so) but they are incredibly colorful and really pop when you look at them. I do think the illustrator's style is to appear more colorful and simple at first glance, but at the same time you will look at the illustrations carefully and see the amount of time and effort that she put into this work. I love this style of simplicity and use of color. Though not the exact same style, I feel like it reminds me of illustrators like William Steig who just have this incredible knack for bringing out amazing details with small illustrations. In fact, I truly and desperately hope that Jemima Catlin will be commissioned for Lord of the Rings. If you happen to read this Jemima, I just wanted to say thanks for putting so much passion and hard work into this book. I look forward to reading this to my children someday and plan on using your version when I do! As a side note, I should mention that some of Tolkien's original maps are included in the front and back of the book.

Lastly, it wouldn't be an appropriate review of The Hobbit without mentioning how amazing this story really is. If there is any part of you that believes in things like magic, risk-taking, adventure, friendship to the end, finding faith in the smallest of people or things, and good triumphing over evil, this is the book for you. I fell in love with the characters of this story and am thankful for authors like J.R.R Tolkien for having that God-given ability to captivate readers through these characters and the adventures they set out on. Every time I read this book I feel like I'm a kid again and that in itself is a great thing in my eyes. However, as an adult this book not only brings about those childhood feelings, but also strengthens my personal faith, and leads me to believe that those who truly live life to the fullest are those who go against the flow, take risks despite the fears or consequences when they know that it's in the name of doing what they feel is right inside of there hearts. I think there really is some of Bilbo Baggins in all of us and we learn a great deal from his adventure.

If you cannot tell, I love this book. It is saying a lot for me that this is my favorite edition of the book so far. This truly is a high-quality, gift edition that you will be very proud to own. Don't hesitate to purchase! Thank you J.R.R Tolkien and Jemima Catlin!

Finally a "real" unabridged recording of LOTR

I am not one who usually buys books-on-tape (or CD as in this case) but I have long wanted to obtain the Lord of the Rings so as to hear this incredible story over and over. After having read it several times, my book is in tatters and so I searched for an unabridged audio recording. Many of those that I have seen claim to be "unabridged" but the fact is that they are not complete! They give parts of the books in full but leave out many sections or chapters. This set by Rob Inglis is COMPLETE!!! It is very well read with no drastic voicing of characters. Characters are easily distinguished and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is not full of sound effects and music, so if you are looking for that this is not for you. However, I personally prefer the fact that this is not an over-production and is rather quite focussed on what I wanted in the first place, the characters and the story. Inglis does a marvelous job and I am very happy with this set. Again, not to harp on it but, this is a "complete" package well worth the money!!!

A Teaser Not a Pleaser

This book promises to take you into the Promised Land of traderdom but leaves you in the desert. It's up to you to find the water. The author may give you some pointers as to where you might find it but you may easily die of thirst trying to get there.
At best, this an introduction to the author's trading methodology. It broadly covers her different techniques: Elliot Wave used in conjunction with oscillators, Fibonacci price projections and retracements, Gann time and price analysis, reverse engineering of indicators to project price. Sounds good doesn't it? Well don't hold your breath. The author keeps the secret of the Holy Grail to herself. If you want the answers, you will have to take her seminars or subscribe to her service.
Just to give you a sense of what I mean: One chapter is entitled "Price Projections by Reverse-Engineering Indicators". You get four pages of excruciating detail on how to export into excel, but when it comes to how she actually reverse engineers the indicator she writes, "Just know that some reverse-engineering projections require you to know the indicator formula and to have Excel generate the results, rather than just plugging in the indicator values from Trade station." How does she do it? She hired professional programmers to do it for her. Yes, that's all very well but then what do we need the book for and why are we paying her? Then there is the infamous Composite Index indicator so essential to her system. It has been repeatedly commented on in the other reviews here. She repeatedly promises to discuss the formula in various parts of the book and a whole chapter is devoted to it. The author writes, "By now you are probably trying to find the formula for the Composite Index". No such luck. Instead, you get, "Forgive my inconveniencing you, but look toward the Aerodynamic Investments Web site... for the outcome of this sticky dilemma." What a tease!
And those aren't the only secret keys she keeps. In the chapter on Gann you find that all the wisdom of Gann is useless for trading indexes unless you possess certain secret conversion factors unknown by the general public, but which were revealed in some letters of Gann possessed by a friend of the Author. These documents were mysteriously destroyed upon his death. "All my attempts to acquire them or to have them preserved failed.," she writes. At any rate she's not revealing the conversion factors.
Later she writes, "While the revelation that a conversion factor is used will understandably discourage some of you from going further and tempt you to skip the remaining chapter..." and then tries to lure you in with "So hang in there as this discussion has only scratched the surface. Besides, aren't you curious about the fourth dimension within the pyramid that I passed over so quickly in the beginning of this chapter? Good. Thought that might work. Onward." But all the reader gets on the pyramid is three scanty sentences in a paragraph in which the author states that there are three dimensions in a Pyramid. But hold your horses, there is also a fourth dimension: time. "It is Gann's Master Calculator or Square of 52," the author states. This fourth dimension can be derived from the Pyramid, but here the author leaves you ruminating once again this time about how to divine the mystical qualities of the Pyramid. You will never know.
Ah, but isn't that why we bought the book in the first place, to find out what we will never know? Don't think to transgress the portals of the Temple of Giseh.

Dance of the 52, or is it 144 veils

As a coda to the reviewer from Beverly Hills, whose points I endorse in full, I would like to highlight the sheer intellectual dishonesty of this book - even the details she reveals are fraudulent and downright silly.
If you have any doubt of this, study Chapter 4 on interpreting charts. Her solution to the problem of how to connect 9 points on a chart with 4 straight continuous trend lines draws a single line through 4 chart points. In Chapter 9, her discussion on Gann approaches to time stresses that "it is important for you to see that Gann does not create charts with excessive meaningless lines when the vibration point for a specific market is understood". She provides exactly that: a chart with excessive meaningless lines and an illegible time scale.
Once the irritation of wasting forty bucks on this dross has passed, one begins to feel sorry for an author who has to tell her readership on every other page about her magic conversion factors that she's not prepared to reveal. This secretiveness seems to be a common feature of followers of W.D. Gann, who, as Alexander Elder points out in his book, made his money not from trading his wonderful theory, but from selling his training courses at inflated prices. She evidently believes that treating her readership like idiots will bring them flocking to her website to buy her particular brand of snake oil.

Don't waste your $ - this book is a joke on the public

The author has little of any practical use to offer - that is if your intent is to make money in the stock market. If studying movements of stock prices with convoluted formulas after the fact fascinates you, then this is your book. Of course one can tell what the stock price did after the fact without the benefit of complicated formulas.
I've seen some works of mental masturbation, but this one takes the grand prize. Amazing how one with a little grasp of mathematics and an enormously inflated ego can bambozzle their employer into paying them a salary. Then you can write a book and bambozzle the public into paying good money for fluff. If you do it on company time, that probably makes you an authority on technical stock analysis, by default. Now that's Chutzpah!
There are many books which explain essentially the same techniques, but without the mysticism, wordiness and deliberate obfuscation to make it seem more "technical and hard to master". Besides, concise and lucid explanations won't fill a 300 page hardcover book that commands a higher price.
The author implies that if one doesn't see the obvious value of her ideas, one is stupid and is not reading close enough. You are one of the idiots of the world who uses default values in your computer programs. Its the emperors new clothes argument: "I can see the clothes, everyone else who is smart can see the clothes, so why can't you see the clothes."
I sorry to say that the emperor is naked.
Good section on predicting stock prices using Astrology, if you are into that kind of fluff. MSFT is in Aquarius with a moon in the first phase - SELL, SELL! Well it's not quite that bad, but close. A chapter is filled with babbling about why charts are so hard to read because of perspective, vanishing points, texture gradients, looking at a 2D chart when the world is 3D, elevation being wrong and the fact that our two eyes are separated by a couple of inches. I kid you not. Art work by M.C. Escher are offered as proof of this off-the-wall psychobabble. I hope the author's cat has a good supply of anti-psychotics lying around to feed the master in case she really goes over the edge.
Boy do I feel taken. I suspect the raving reviews that I read before purchasing the book were mostly written by the author (and her cat) under various psuedonyms to promote its sale. I notice that her attacks on non-positive reviewers critize the reader on a lack of mathmatical ability - here's the emperor's new clothes bit again. This is not the issue at all. The issue is lack of usable content, poor communication in the writing and just plain weirdness.
