Well told insider's view of racing over 40 years
By Bob G
This is a fun, informative look inside auto racing a 40 year period, starting in Mexico but mostly in Europe. It's properly titled memoirs rather than autobiography. Ramirez is generous and amusing in his tales about almost everyone in the book. He's too modest about his own role. For many pages in the 2nd half of the book it I wanted to know more of what Jo was doing and what the experience was like. The 2nd half also drifts a bit far into celebrities & parties. That plus too little introspection held the book short of 5 stars to me. Jo lived with racing's high level of fatalities in the first 20 years of the book. It must have been traumatic to take care of the broken Tyrrell after Francois Cevert's fatal accident. He honestly portrays each event. I don't envy him recalling these and writing about them accurately. A little more of Ramirez himself living through it all would give the book some extra depth.

Ramirez's focus is on personalities, anecdotes and memorable events. I don't think anyone else could deal honestly with the Prost-Senna conflicts from up so close and show such fairness with both sides. Even the biggest names here come across as regular people -- but I think it's a reflection of the author's personality. He enjoyed his life in racing and has written a book that carries that enjoyment with it.

I'll most likely be reading this one a couple more times because I enjoyed Jo Ramirez's story so much
By Ray Mitchell
My only regret with this book is that I didn't buy it much sooner! I'm a life long F1 follower and have bought quite a few books about the sport over the years, but this one really paints a picture and puts the reader right in the middle of it. I'll most likely be reading this one a couple more times because I enjoyed Jo Ramirez's story so much.

Great Formula 1 Racing Book
By Ruben Contreras
I have read many racing books and also many Formula 1 books. I can only say this ine is a must for anyone interested in Formula 1. Prominent racing events from 1963 through 2001 are described by the very well liked Mexican. Jo Ramirez knew every one from the Formula 1 team's mechanics all the way up to Ernie Ecclestone. This book is the best way to understand the very complicated personalities of Ayrton Senna and Ron Dennis from Mc Laren, as no one has described them so well before and he worked with them and also had a personal relationship with both. I will treasure my copy as the best racing book I own.

Don't let's go to Zimbabwe tonight
By Gillian A
'Mukiwa' opens with a six year old boy describing what he sees of a local murder. So begins this enthralling memoir. This saga of a youth growing up in troubled Zimbabwe (Rhodesia at that time), is divided into three parts.

Book I, which comprises half of the book, is seen through the eyes of a child and told in that voice. As such it is reminiscent of 'Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight' by Alexandra Fuller. Both authors grew up in the eastern highlands of Rhodesia, near Umtali and the Mozambique border. One is a boy's story, the other a girl's and the differences are largely stylistic. They were separated by about ten years and 'Dogs' focuses only on one family, with the bush war only in the background, whereas 'Mukiwa' gives a broader picture of life in the remote, often dangerous, areas of the country. A preschool boy accompanies his mother, a doctor, to various bush clinics where she is both GP and pathologist. Before long he can recognize not only dead bodies, but also malaria, TB, leprosy and other ailments. In this lonely place he forms close relationships with the various African staff and describes the harshness of their life there as well as the miseries of boarding school for a young child.

In Book II, the author's hopes dashed that he cannot leave the country to attend university because of the compulsory conscription policy, finds himself in the midst of a brutal guerrilla war. His job is made harder by his ambivalent feelings as he frequently sympathizes with the `terrorists'. He leaves finally only when defeat is conceded.

In Book III he returns to the country, now with a law degree from Cambridge. Joining a distinguished firm in the capital, he is put to work defending prominent, former `freedom fighters' of the Matabele tribe. The new Mugabe government, dominated by the Shona tribe, ignores the fact that the Matabele had fought alongside them to win the war and are now moving against them, re-establishing the age-old hatred and rivalry between the two groups. With a bitter-sweet outcome of the trial, the author decides to become a journalist with a London newspaper. In this capacity he is urged to investigate reports of genocide and acts of brutality in Matabeleland, again perpetrated by government forces. His reports are largely ignored by both the Zimbabwe government and the international community.

Published in 1996, the book naturally does not cover the more recent atrocities metered out by Robert Mugabe. It is disappointing that very few dates are given, so that the whole story sort of floats in an indistinct time. However, it is ever-absorbing, sometimes shocking and by the last part, a totally gripping tale. I even thought it would make a very good movie.

Provides A Clear Understanding of Zimbbwe's Tribal Problems
By Tommy Lee Brock
In some respects this might be a white boy's account of growing up in Zimbabwe, sort of a counter part to Alexandra Fuller's "Don't Lets go to the Dogs Tonight, " a girl's account of life there. In fact they were raised in the same far east part of the country, but the Godwins were there ten years before. There is not the crazy, yet sympathetic antics of a mother that has had a breakdown, and Peter's father, unlike Mr. Fuller, had too much good sense to develop into an exciting character. That leaves it up to Peter Goodwin himself. And he certainly does the job. His own explorations and encounters with the curious Shona, curious other Africans, and curious whites are presented matter of fact, with lots of gritty detail.

I also understand much better the tribal aspects among Zimbabwe's native Africans, particularly between the Shona, the Matabele, and the Manicas. Their dislike for one another began many years before the white tribe ever arrived, and persists long after they left.

Among the many characters was Godwin's hippie cousin, Oliver, who traveled to Rhodesia with the notion that if he and his counterparts across the world could teach the whites of the country to treat the blacks with more understanding, more kindness, and more consideration, while providing them with a better irrigation system, lots more nourishing food, and better plumbing, Zimbabwe would evolve into a country where everyone could understand each other. Coming to understand the tribal background of Zimbabwe, and the many character sketches such as the one of Oliver are why I rated Mukiwa five stars.

A One-of-a-kind and very special book
By Joe McDaniel
Mukiwa is a one-of-a-kind and very special book. The author's descriptive abilities are exceptional. Having lived in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe for 13 years (1966 to 1980) and having first-hand knowledge of Godwin's material, I was totally enthralled with his narrative and the truthfulness of his account. I cannot recommend this book more highly. I wish there was a 10-star measure. It nudges Ruark's Something of Value and Wilbur Smith's When the Lion Feeds from the top of my list of all-time favorite books about Africa and the African Experience.

Children of Crisis, by Robert Coles

In the 1950s Robert Coles began studying, living among, and, above all, listening to American children. The results of his efforts--revealed in five volumes published between 1967 and 1977--constitute one of the most searching and vigorous social studies ever undertaken by one person in the United States. Here, heard often in their own voices, are America's "children of crisis": African American children caught in the throes of the South's racial integration; The children of impoverished migrant workers in Appalachia; Children whose families were transformed by the migration from South to North, from rural to urban communities; Latino, Native American, and Eskimo children in the poorest communities of the American West; The children of America's wealthiest families confronting the burden of their own privilege. This volume restores to print a masterwork of psychological and sociological inquiry--a book that, in its focus on how children learn and develop in the face of rapid change and social upheaval, speaks directly and pointedly to our own times. Robert Coles is a professor of psychiatry and medical humanities at the Harvard Medical School, a research psychiatrist for the Harvard University Health Services, and the James Agee Professor of Social Ethics at Harvard College.

Inspiring
By Joyce
This book is made up of selections from the Pulitzer Prize-winning five-volume series based on Coles' taped interviews with children and their parents across the country in the `60s and `70s. What inspires me about Coles is his willingness and capacity to respectfully listen. The honesty and depth of the stories he was told are obviously a result of the trust he engendered. Through the voices of migrant worker, sharecropper, mountaineer, Eskimo, Chicano, Indian, Black, and White in this book I learned what living poor is like "on the ground," and it is tough. However, the final volume is on the children of the wealthy, and wealth is no easy road for a child either. In many ways parents focused on protecting their wealth and privilege are poorer parents than those having to scramble for their livelihood. Coles puts his psychiatry in a sociological context allowing us to see more clearly our nation's weaknesses as well as its strengths.

This book is so beautiful and full of love for humanity. The style is readable but elevated, almost literary. I wish it were short enough for everyone to want to try.

BiblioTech: Why Libraries Matter More Than Ever in the Age of Google, by John Palfrey

Libraries today are more important than ever. More than just book repositories, libraries can become bulwarks against some of the most crucial challenges of our age: unequal access to education, jobs, and information.

In BiblioTech, educator and technology expert John Palfrey argues that anyone seeking to participate in the 21st century needs to understand how to find and use the vast stores of information available online. And libraries, which play a crucial role in making these skills and information available, are at risk. In order to survive our rapidly modernizing world and dwindling government funding, libraries must make the transition to a digital future as soon as possible—by digitizing print material and ensuring that born-digital material is publicly available online.

Not all of these changes will be easy for libraries to implement. But as Palfrey boldly argues, these modifications are vital if we hope to save libraries and, through them, the American democratic ideal.

Review
New York Review of Books
“In his new book, BiblioTech, a wise and passionate manifesto, John Palfrey reminds us that the library is the last free space for the gathering and sharing of knowledge.”

Washington Post
“Palfrey is adept at explaining the struggles libraries face with technologies that constrain as much as they liberate...[and] is particularly good at explaining new legal challenges to preserving information.”

Nature
“Anyone interested in the future of libraries — and whether there is one at all — will find much to mull over in this book.”

Miami Herald
“The persuasive argument Palfrey makes in BiblioTech is simple: The conventional wisdom that suggests libraries aren’t important anymore — and thus require less funding — isn’t true, no matter how many Google searches we can perform on our phones.”

Roanoke Times
“BiblioTech is an exciting adventure — the exercise of imagining how we can provide a library model that will ensure the continued education and enjoyment of future generations no matter how they create and receive the information they will share.”

Seattle Post-Intelligencer's Book Patrol blog
“[A] lucid, passionate account of the state of American libraries… a handy guide for how to begin to right the ship.”

LibraryCity.org
“A must-read.... BiblioTech reminds us that libraries are and should be about much more than books.”

VOYA Magazine
“Thought-provoking and well-researched, this book takes a long view of the role of libraries in communities and society with careful attention to the shifts required to retain relevance in the digital age.”

Library Journal, starred review
“A celebration of libraries as well as a dose of tough love.... [T]his work should be required reading for librarians, particularly those who are looking to lead their libraries into the future.”

Publishers Weekly
“Carves out a strong and exciting vision for libraries in the 21st century.”

Kirkus
“Palfrey provides insight into local efforts in schools and libraries around the country.... A significant wake-up call.”

John Willinsky, Khosla Family Professor of Education at Stanford University
“In this engaging shout-out to public libraries as bastions of info-age equality and opportunity, John Palfrey presents a compelling vision of a ‘network-scale’ revitalization of their contributions to learning and community.”

Jonathan Zittrain, Vice Dean for Library and Information Resources at the Harvard Law School Library, and co-founder of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society
“John Palfrey’s BiblioTech is a sparkling call to action for libraries everywhere—urging them to collaborate and adapt to survive in the ever-expanding, increasingly digital information landscape. Libraries that heed Palfrey’s call will find themselves poised to rise to the occasion of the twenty-first century and continue to fulfill their core societal functions: building communities, democratizing access to information, and educating the next generation.”

Maureen Sullivan, former President of the American Libraries Association
“John Palfrey, a true visionary who deeply understands the enduring importance of libraries, makes an urgent and compelling case for the transformation and sustainability of this critical education institution. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand why it is so critical to make a renewed investment in this essential democratic institution. His brilliant and lucid analysis offers a path, and describes how policy makers, community leaders, librarians, and technologists can work to ensure that libraries will enable everyone to be successful in a networked world.”

Luis Herrera, City Librarian of the San Francisco Public Library
“In BiblioTech, John Palfrey offers fresh perspectives and keen insights on the importance of libraries in the digital age. He reaffirms the value of libraries as purveyors of knowledge and information in democracies around the world. Yet, he reminds us that we must leverage our core values and skills as collaborators, networkers, and community builders for libraries to remain relevant. BiblioTech is a call to action for libraries to claim their role as key innovators in learning, addressing digital literacy, and bridging the technology divide in order to thrive in the Age of Google.”

Tony Marx, President and CEO of the New York Public Library
“John Palfrey insightfully charts the information revolution’s path through the world of libraries, where he has been an innovator. We are indeed at an exciting moment.”

Susan Hildreth, former Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services
“BiblioTech is a must read for anyone who cares about the future of libraries. John Palfrey has eloquently identified the essential role libraries play in keeping our democracy strong and has clearly articulated the challenges facing libraries today. This is a true wake-up call. We may very well fail our communities and society if we do not invest in library innovation that supports access and preservation of knowledge at scale.”

Jim Leach, former Chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities
“In BiblioTech, John Palfrey sums up the seminal function libraries have played in inspiring and preserving creative thought over the ages. Then, with confident optimism, Palfrey makes it—counter intuitively—clear that the digital age has expanded the function and energy level of libraries. In a splintered world, these book-centric institutions have also become singularly safe and welcoming tech havens where the public can seek knowledge and gain access to wide-ranging perspectives about events and circumstances, real and fictional. It is the library where the imagination is un-shackled, where the past and present can be civilly probed and the future contemplated, alone or together in community. As a society we short-change these civilizing institutions at our peril.”

Deborah L Jacobs, former City Librarian of the Seattle Public Library
“John Palfrey has crafted a bold new vision and compelling argument for the power and value of public libraries. Perhaps more importantly he warns us of the unfortunate future for free societies if we simply stay the course and don’t ‘create a new nostalgia’ for the digital age. Many speeches have been given and books written on the topic of the ‘future library,’ but this is the finest and most inspiring call to true action I’ve read. BiblioTech should be required reading for not only every librarian, but every library supporter and policymaker.”

Doron Weber, Vice President of Programs and Program Director at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
“One of America’s top educators and library leaders makes a passionate argument for why libraries in the digital age are more important than ever to our democracy. In a lucid, conversational style that draws on his unique knowledge and experience, digital library pioneer John Palfrey offers a penetrating analysis of how libraries must transition to a digital, collaborative, and networked future while preserving the best of their traditional physical advantages. An urgent, eloquent call for the public option—indeed, the public obligation!—to step up and manage this historic shift to the digital future so that every member of society has equal access to knowledge and information that is responsibly presented and preserved for the benefit of all.”

Lawrence Lessig, author of Republic, Lost: How Money Corrupts Congress—and a Plan to Stop It
“A powerful and beautifully crafted argument for extending the reach of one our culture's most important common resources: the library. But John Palfrey’s unique perspective—as an educator, an academic administrator, former law professor, and former law librarian—makes this a book not just about libraries, but also about culture in the digital age, and how much common culture depends upon the commitment to shared and public resources.”

Robert Darnton, Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor of History and University Librarian, Harvard University
“John Palfrey makes a convincing case for the ever-increasing importance of libraries in ‘the age of Google.’ With wit and wisdom, he shows how they can help create a democratic digital future—provided that we overcome a nostalgic view of their past and an inadequate understanding of their place in the current information environment.”

Brian Bannon, Commissioner, Chicago Public Library
“BiblioTech offers a historical account of libraries’ iconic past and chronicles the environmental shifts and dangers we may face if we fail to support and lead their next evolution. As libraries experience unprecedented instability, John Palfrey’s BiblioTech offers unique insight into the complex challenges and opportunities in the digital and physical world while giving hope for a successful future. This is essential reading for librarians, educators, policy makers, and all who care about the public institutions that support the citizens who are the basis of a vibrant democracy.”

David S. Ferriero, Archivist of the United States, former Andrew W. Mellon Director of the New York Public Libraries
“In BiblioTech, John Palfrey challenges the library and archival communities to pursue new strategies to shape, rather than be shaped by, the digital revolution. This is a call to action for these institutions to reinvent themselves to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s world. BiblioTech argues for the creation of a new nostalgia, one that reaffirms the essential role of these institutions in a democratic society—to inform, to engage, and to delight.”

Amy Ryan, President of the Boston Public Library
“BiblioTech is a call to arms to foster democracy by supporting libraries. John Palfrey takes the reader on a library journey from the libraries of antiquity through the Carnegie era and into the digital age and beyond. He challenges all of us to keep the library relevant—as an information resource, cultural archive, a community gathering place, and most powerfully, as a cornerstone of democracy for an informed citizenry.”

Howard Gardner, Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education
“Whether you think you know a lot about libraries today and in the future—or feel clueless about both issues—you will be enlightened by John Palfrey’s thoughtful, timely, and lucid presentation.”

Google and the Librarians
By Ron Titus
John Palfrey channels passion and desire in making his case as to why libraries are relevant and more needed in this age of Google then ever. He works on presenting a rational, yet passionate plea for the role libraries played in America's past and the part he thinks it needs to play in the present and future for the betterment of society.

Palfrey provides a list of what he considers the problems facing today's libraries: public use (and understanding of libraries); physical space versus virtual space; a desire to change libraries from locations to platforms (although he does acknowledge that hybrid libraries will be a necessity for the near future); networking for collection and preservation; and a decent chapter on copyright. He ends the book with a ten item list of what he thinks need to be done to make libraries relevant in the future.

Despite his dry, passionate arguments, Palfrey's list strike this reader (a veteran librarian for 30 years) as well meaning, overdone, and often contradictory. They resonate with similar calls of action that have rung out over the years, been applauded by librarians and done little but deforest the land. Despite all the pleas and posturing, I foresee libraries continue to astound critics and supporters in the future despite all the grandiose plans made by library honchos because of the front line librarians' impact on students and patrons.

Lawyer's Moot Point
By Cathy Gontar
Another work opposing digital and print. To use legal term, it's moot. We are beyond this and so this work is redundant if not anachronistic.
A now decades old discussion. Libraries have done wonderful work of making their holdings available online
in catalogs and full text. As a teaching librarian in my experience in both public and academic libraries there
is still great demand and often preference for print versions. Each format has its advantages. What researcher will prefer seeing the
manuscript online to in situ if he has the choice? What student will prefer reading Moby Dick online to holding
the novel in his hands? Text searching tools in conjunction with online texts are marvelous.
We can go on forever comparing and contrasting advantages and disadvantages but the bottom line is
you will be hard put to find humanists who will separate from print.

Enjoyable
By Autamme_dot_com
If you have more than a passing interest in reading books and have grown up knowing what a good library is, this is a book you should be looking at. If you haven’t, well, you need to discover what you are missing…

Despite Google being infinitely more powerful and more responsive than a traditional library, there is still something to be said about a library, staffed by professional librarians, that we should not throw away and lose. Clearly libraries need to keep up with the digital world, they can act as crucial staging posts and trusted guides to disparate information. Sure, we can all enter our search terms into Google and other search engines and hope we can find what we are looking for, yet often you need to step off the beaten track and then the power of a good librarian comes into focus.

This is a fascinating, thoughtful and challenging book that looks at how libraries must change to remain relevant and present in the modern-day digital world, especially as funding for the traditional library is under increasing pressure. Many younger people are not learning to love libraries nor understand their purpose. It is not enough to look back at the old days with misty eyes, there can and must be a place for libraries and information retrieval in the future. What we think of a library today might be different tomorrow.

Maybe this reviewer is lucky: he grew up to understand and appreciate a good library and still is an active library user today. Some of the changes in public and academic libraries are hard to accept (making noise in a library space still feels wrong) but other changes are changes for the good. Being able to log in to a remote library’s computer system to use a search database sure beats traipsing down to the physical building to use a card index and hope to find a match, before looking for a journal article in a stack or on microfilm. A job that could take hours (or weeks if the journal had to be ordered from the other side of the world) can be done in minutes now, all from one’s sofa. Reading this book can only underline the importance of a library, the importance of necessary change and the importance of keeping the library relevant for future generations.

Of course, if you are not sure you are going to be really sold on this book there is another option: visit a, err, library and avail yourself of its services…

Guitar EncycloMedia Breaks New Ground
By Marc Newman
It seems that every week or two another book about vintage Gibsons or Fender amps hits the market. And, despite the good intentions of the authors', rarely do these books ever really break new ground. Mike Overly's "Guitar EncycloMedia" is a significant exception to that rule however; affording a uniquely comprehensive, yet very different approach towards enhancing the skills of us guitar players. We took a little time a little while back and asked Mike to explain his concept to us.
Marc Newman: Tell our readers what the basic idea is behind "Guitar EncycloMedia"?
Mike Overly: Simply stated, the Guitar EncycloMedia teaches you to see the whole fretboard so that you can easily play its many chord, scale and arpeggio fragments. Guitar EncycloMedia not only contains all the chords, scales and arpeggios necessary to play any song, but it also thoroughly explains how to apply them, enabling every guitarist to play something uniquely different - every time, with every song. Now I know that playing other peoples music can be fun, but it can be just as fun - as well as rewarding and exciting - to create your own songs! However, being original is sometimes hard. So I wrote Guitar EncycloMedia to make the "hard" easy, less of a challenge and a lot more enjoyable to the guitarist of any level by presenting a simple way to find a "virtually endless" number of related musical ideas that can be applied to any given chord or chord progression.
MN: The book's premise sounds terrific but is this something you read from cover to cover and then you have it all down or is this something that a more experienced player can use as well?
MO: Guitar EncycloMedia is structured sequentially (like a method) so you may begin on page one and proceed page by page through the entire book, or you may open it at random (like a reference) and use it with all your other guitar books and magazines. And because of this "duel nature" both the beginning guitarist and those who are highly advanced may benefit from its use.
MN: Give us an idea of exactly how the book would be of use to the average guitarist.
MO: Guitar EncycloMedia (with the help of Fretboard Flashcards) teaches you a simple system of learning and remembering vast amounts of musical information by simply seeing your guitar fretboard as an "alphabet" of 12 pitches from which you "spell" a vocabulary of chords, scales and arpeggios. This simple system helps you "put together" all the seemingly unrelated musical ideas that are found in countless guitar books and magazines. And it does so without the use of TAB or Staff Notation! In addition, Guitar EncycloMedia presents an "almost infinite" number of ways to make any song sound uniquely your own. And with 42 songs included in Guitar EncycloMedia you are provided with the opportunity to immediately apply your newly acquired knowledge and understanding in a practical way.
MN: I remember hearing years ago about this radical "Suzuki Method" that taught young children how to play the violin by teaching them how to play songs rather than burdening first with learning how to read music. It almost sounds as if you have conceived a kind of "Suzuki Method" for guitar players so that once the guitarist starts to put together the "puzzle pieces" they are getting to see the rewards right away.
MO: It's important to remember that before the fingers can move, there must be "thought in the brain". Guitar EncycloMedia provides you with many applicable thoughts that will help you know what you're playing, understand how to apply what you know and to become a more successful guitarist. A greater knowledge about music and the guitar can only make you better!
MN: Given the success of "Guitar EncycloMedia", do you have any sort of follow-up in mind?
MO: "Fretboard Flashcards" for Guitar and for 4 and 5 String Bass have been published by 12 Tone Music Publishing and are now available. I have begun working on the "Guitar EncycloMedia Workbook" which will provide an in-depth study of the ideas introduced in Guitar EncycloMedia. I'm also wrapping up the "play along tracks" for the 42 songs included in Guitar EncycloMedia - a CD and cassette will be available in the near future and the "Guitar EncycloMedia Instructional Video" is nearly completed and should be available Winter 2000.
MN: What else do you do in addition to writing?
MO: I'm the Director of Music Education and a full time teacher at a large music store in Dayton, Ohio. This provides me the opportunity to continue developing my thoughts about music and its application to the guitar. I promote Guitar EncycloMedia at numerous vintage guitar shows across the country where I get to personally meet and talk with many guitarists of all styles and levels and I also have a local cable TV show "'The Guitar Forum" which airs at various times throughout the week.
MN: Thanks Mike.
MO: You're welcome Marc, thank you.

Guitar Encyclomedia and Fretboard Flashcards by Chris Bereznay
Mike Overly has been teaching, performing and positively impacting the lives of guitarists for decades. If you visit the 12 Tone Music site ... and read his bio, it's enough to make you wonder if there's any hope for you if you didn't start in music at the wee toddler ages. It's this type of experience and background, though, that have gone into some of the finest instructional materials for the guitar that I've ever seen. What I'm talking about folks is the Guitar Encyclomedia and Fretboard Flashcards from Mike Overly and 12 Tone Music Publishing.
If you're like me, and probably a lot of other guitarists out there, you started playing and "kind-of" taught yourself by reading magazines, playing with others, listening to recordings, etc. You might have learned power chords first; maybe even learned alternate picking so that you could play those fast solos just like Eddie Van Halen. After a few months or even years, though, your skills began to flat-line. You ended up playing the same things over and over again because this is what you were comfortable with. If you're not like me, you're lucky. I've been playing for close to 20 years now and I probably 'flat-lined' years ago. Lately, though, I've taken a renewed interested in developing my skills and decided to start looking around for good sources on theory and fretboard skills.
While cruising the web a few weeks ago, I ran into an ad for the Guitar Encyclomedia by Mike Overly. To me, "encyclomedia" was denoting a complete guitar reference and that was exactly what I was looking for. Something I could refer to as I began to "teach myself" again the subtle and not so subtle nuances of guitar and theory. What I found when the packaged arrived, however, was not just a simple all-encompassing reference. What I found was a detailed and thorough series of adventures around the fretboard. Structured in lesson format, I began to embark on a new educational journey that would ultimately lead to many string changes for my brand new Strat.
You see I've always been the guy that took more pride in my creative abilities and the songs, chord progressions, riffs and licks that I would come up with, than with how many Led Zeppelin riffs I could memorize. The nice thing about the Guitar Encyclomedia, though, is that it can benefit both types of guitarists. Those that tend to be songwriters, though, ultimately stand to benefit far greater from this excellent reference. Those of you who fall into this category know who you are. How many times have you been working on a really cool chord progression and just can't seem to find the next chord to make the whole piece tie together? Frustrating, isn't it? After using these tools, my friends, you will never ask the question "What do I play the second time through this song?"
Mike Overly lays the foundation around what some refer to as the CAGED system. This is where the fundamental principles of guitar are taught around the 5 major chord forms that are movable all over the neck of the guitar. Mike often quips that all you ever needed to know is what you "learned at your first lesson"!
Probably one of the coolest features of the Guitar Encyclomedia is that it presents its material in four parts; CHORD - SCALE - ARPEGGIO - SONG. According to Mike Overly, "Theoretically, scales come first and from the letters and tones of the scale, chords and arpeggios are spelled (constructed). However, I've chosen to introduce chords first because we tend to hear the harmony (chords) of a song and then play a melody (scale) that fits the chords." I can attest that this approach works and is more effective than burying you in some theory that you can't relate anything to. The chord structures and forms that come first give you something to relate to and help to build your understanding of scales and arpeggios on top of them - leading finally to song structure.
One of my favorite activities while reviewing these products over the past several weeks has been to sit down and go through various sections of the Guitar Encyclomedia and write new songs based on some of the variations present. At the end of each major section in the book you'll find a song that highlights the information presented in the pages preceding it. This is extremely useful as it gives you an immediate opportunity to practice the skills you've learned. What I will do is make a quick recording, usually with an acoustic guitar, laying down rhythm tracks with the chords in the song. Then, once this recording is made, I'll go over the scales and arpeggios to enhance the impact that the material has just made. This has helped retention greatly.
In addition to the Guitar Encyclomedia, Music Gear Review also received the Fretboard Flashcards that Mike Overly and 12 Tone Music offer. We received the guitar, 4 string and 5 string bass guitar versions and in addition to the material covered in the Guitar Encyclomedia, have been heavily utilizing these as well. The Flashcards are organized in a color-coded scheme and where on one side there is a string number and a letter. On the back of the card, the trainee has to correctly identify the fret that the letter on the front represents. In addition, the student can see a picture of the fretboard with the location of the letter clearly located for visualization purposes. For those of you studying how to read standard notation, don't fret ( no pun intended ), there's also staff notation! It's like a complete Fretboard map in a stack that's almost the same size as a deck of cards - which makes them portable too! My poor wife has been promoted to "teacher" and I've been bugging her a few times a week to test me on the flashcards. What I need to mention here though is that alone, they do a great job of familiarizing you with the fretboard. Combined with another approach, however, they're twice as effective. For the past week I've also been testing the "Absolute Fretboard" software and the two combined together have really been helping me make some progress. I would recommend that with anything though. Although the Guitar Encyclomedia and Fretboard Flashcards are some of the finest instructional items we've seen here at Music Gear Review, we highly recommend supplementing as well as "mixing and matching" methods. One of the hardest things about any musical theory is maintaining your interest. If your only approach is the Guitar Encyclomedia book, you're going to burn out on it. Sure, the Flashcards add some shelf life to the equation, but definitely utilize as many different avenues as you can without confusing yourself.
Bottom Line:
The simple truth is that the Guitar Encyclomedia and Fretboard Flashcards provide the learning guitarist with more than enough tools for the money. What is contained in these packages would take years upon years and hundreds if not thousands of dollars of guitar lessons to obtain. Depending on the teacher that you routinely visit, you may not even get some of this information. I would highly recommend these tools to anyone that's looking to improve their skills on the guitar. I would even recommend this to some guitar instructors so that they are careful not to miss any important topics when planning their lessons for their students. Mike Overly and 12 Tone Music Publishing have done a wonderful job at presenting the information. I also understand that in addition to the workbook mentioned above, there's also a CD and tape in the works that will eventually accompany the manual. The only suggestion or request I would make to Mike Overly is to add some more color and possibly some "hand on the fretboard" images to the book on one of the future revisions.
In conclusion, I could have gone over every little detail of what is in the Guitar Encyclomedia. I didn't for a reason. I really think you need to browse your way over to the 12 Tone Music site and check out the information for yourself. There's over a dozen sample lessons from the book out on the website so you'll really get a feel for the quality of the materials you'd be getting if you purchased the book and the flash cards. If you are committed to developing your skills, you owe it to yourself to get the book and the flashcards. For basically $50, you'll have a complete reference for guitar.

Mike Overly - Guitar EncycloMedia
By A Customer
With his impressive book Mike thoroughly explains all the musical tools you run across as a guitarist - scales, intervals, pentatonic, arpeggios, chords, etc... the list is endless. It is one of the most complete reference book I have come across, equally addressing beginners and advanced players (although I think that it can be somewhat confusing to absolute beginners due to the huge information flood).
The strength of this book lies in it's timeless topics, meaning you can look up a topic when you want to learn more about it (or need information about it), rather than studying the entire book in one sitting.

She has found the peace that she lost the night she lost her unborn child. She would do anything to protect her newfound family, even if that meant facing the devil himself.

The minute Jet Hannigan walks back into her life that’s exactly what she has to do.

Jet Hannigan is officially a free man. With his parole lifted he can finally do what he's been aching to do, go after the only woman who will ever own his heart. He's known where she is for months and has been impatiently waiting for the day he could reclaim her. What he wasn't expecting was to have to pull out the big guns and blackmail her into returning to Creswell Springs with him. Instead he brings her home to a war zone.

Angel’s Halo: Reclaimed (Angel’s Halo MC #4)
By: Terri Anne Browning
3/5 stars

I really like Jet’s character, even though he was a jerk, he did do things that redeemed himself from his actions. He beat Flick’s attacker to death which got him sent to prison. Then he pulled off a hit, on a man in prison, for Flick. And for Flick’s part, I don’t blame her for running away. She needed some peace from all of the memories that “home” held for her. But things were hard because she did love Jet and missed her best friend Raven.

I was so looking forward to this book, for quite some time, but the book just didn’t live up to what I wanted. There were times I rolled my eyes so much, when I had to suspend all of reality and common sense knowledge of crime scene & police procedure, that I just couldn’t do it. There’s no way that she would know that much club business, especially in such great detail, or that someone as hardened as Jet would openly talk to her about stuff that was supposed to be club secrets. Then she knows the connecting side of the business way to well and she’s actually the reason for a partnership. She’s not even related to the boss. There were other things that got on my nerves, but might be too spoiler-ish.

Though this book was a miss for me, the writing was good, and I plan to follow this series.

Jet and Felicity
By Kindle Customer
This is a great series. Jet, former President of the MC was in prison when Felicity left to go work for Emmie, (the Rocker series) as a nanny. Jet has always loved Felicity but never told her. When she disappeared, he knew he had to bring back home where she belonged. Ups and downs of love and an unknown danger makes this book a must read. Can be read as a standalone. But series is great. Another winner by Terri Anne Browning.

Not my favorite MCer
By Melissa
I love Terri Anne Browning. She knows her rockers and her bikers. But... this one fell short for me.

I didn't hate it, but I had such higher hopes for this book honestly. I love Flick, but I really don't like Jet. He has his redeeming moments, but overall. I didn't like his attitude.

I'm anxiously waiting to see what happens next.
