Review

'Planning for a new pediatric or neonatal ICU is daunting for most clinicians. Few have prior experience, and the skills needed are far different from those they use on a regular basis. Until now, the accumulated wisdom available to them from others who have gone through the planning process has been incomplete, inconsistent, and at times even inaccurate. With the publication of Mardelle Shepley's Design for Pediatric and Neonatal Critical Care, this void has been filled in remarkable fashion.

A first attempt to address such a complex issue tends to be rudimentary in areas where the author(s) may not have expertise. But Design for Pediatric and Neonatal Critical Care excels in every area. Form and function, design as well as operational issues which might impact design are considered by experts from every relevant discipline, with an international perspective.

Clinicians now have a superb resource to guide them through the planning process for a new ICU, and many babies, families, and caregivers will benefit as a result.' - Bob White, Director, Regional Newborn Program, Memorial Hospital, South Bend, IN.

An essential contribution to the field
By Naomi Alena Sachs
This is the first and only book on design for pediatric and neonatal care. For this reason alone, it would be an important contribution to the field of healthcare and design. In addition, the book's content is first-rate. Dr. Shepley's writing is clear and comprehensive. Guest author contributions by clinicians, designers, and researchers add further depth. Photos, illustrations, and diagrams illustrate research, concepts, and successful design implementation. This book is a must-read for anyone involved in this field, including healthcare clinicians and administrators, designers, researchers, and students.

Fun coloring book for Harry Potter Fans but has some issues which effect coloring – printed on both sides of page
By iiiireader
[[VIDEOID:baef00871261c5a4efe8bb9b778966cd]]Attached to this review will be a silent flip-through of the entire coloring book so you can make an informed decision as to whether or not it will work for you.

Rather than discuss how this is like or different from the books and/or movie series except to note that the iconic images seem to be taken primarily from the movie, I will discuss only how I feel about it as an adult coloring book.

The book is illustrated by a variety of artists and it shows. Some of the designs are simply drawn and some are complex, a few with small intricate details that may be difficult to color. I am really glad that they did not over draw the faces with too much detail as I will be able to add my own blending (this was a problem with the recent Sherlock coloring book.) Some of the designs are quite heavy on black spaces – something I would have preferred to put in myself. Otherwise, the designs are well done artistically. They have included glossy pages at the end of the book – perhaps so we can know what colors are to be used or simply as a fun addition to the book.

The book is printed on both sides of off-white heavyweight and non-perforated paper. A good number of the designs are printed across two pages and merge into the bind (which is glued rather than sewn.) I did a count and this is what I came up with: 40 one page designs, 4 of which are “wallpaper” repeating patterns; 19 designs spread across two pages – 5 of which are wallpaper style designs. Unfortunately, a good many of the iconic scenes were in the ones that were spread across two sheets. I was able to bend the binding enough to get the book to lay flat and found that the pages lines up very well and I didn't lose any of the picture into the binding itself.

What was weird for me is the smell of the book. I can only think that it is the ink and/or the paper but I had several individuals smell it and we all said it was reminiscent of mildew. I've bought inexpensive paperback books in the past with the same odor and I have never been able to figure out what it is. It is not mildew but it kind of smells like it. The smell is present inside and also on the cover. If you are sensitive to scent, you may want to take this into consideration.

I tested my coloring tools: all markers bleed through though Staedler triplus fineliners merely left a shadow of color rather than full ink – but you could tell what the color was from the back of the page. Gel pens did not leak through but again, there was a very light shadow. The paper did well with various coloring pencils.

In the end, the fact that ink could leak through and the pages were printed doubled sided was enough for me to take away a point. It forces me into coloring pencils of losing part of the book. I wish the book had perforated paper but I don't detract for that. The odor – well, that may be only a few books, so again, I won't take away for that but do check to see if yours has a similar smell.

Completely and utterly disappointed with the artistic style of the ink drawings
By I Sniff Books - Beth
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Harry Potter stories so, like everyone else on the planet, I got excited when I learned that Scholastic Books was going to be releasing a new Harry Potter coloring book. For sure, there have been other Harry Potter coloring books, but lately there seems to be a resurgence in all things Harry Potter. There are books that take you behind-the-films such as Harry Potter Film Wizardry and Harry Potter: Magical Places from the Films: Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, and Beyond. And, earlier this month, the gorgeous illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: The Illustrated Edition (Harry Potter, Book 1) was released. For me, this resurgence is terribly exciting because I came to read (and fall in love) with the series well after the last book was published and thus missed out on the release of and excitement for all sorts of Harry Potter “things.”

Anyway. Back to the coloring book! I was really excited that I would be able to re-visit the wizarding world via coloring. Especially since the blurb on the back cover promised:

“…explorations of Hogwarts Castle, the Forbidden Forest, and much more…[and] pages of magical creatures and iconic scenes from the films…as well as some of the marvelous props used in the movies…”

However, once the coloring book arrived in my hands my excitement turned quickly to disappointment. I had visions of all sorts of things I hoped I would be able to color: the Hogwarts Express; a Hogwarts Castle corridor with magical portraits and statues; The Great Hall; the Hogwarts Library; a classroom setting; school supplies; a textbook page; or even storefronts (or interiors of shops) from Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade. None of these make an appearance in the coloring book.

Also, I’m not sure how to describe the artistic style of the ink drawings other than to say bluntly that I do not like it at all — and oh how it hurts my Harry Potter fangirl heart to say that. I had high expectations for this coloring book and was very much let down — much more so by the artistic style than what I had hoped to be able to color.

Adult coloring books are super hot right now, and while I ♥ Harry Potter, maybe this brand new Harry Potter coloring book is just too much of a good thing. Is there such a thing as too much Harry Potter merchandise? Either way, Scholastic Books plans to release at least three more Harry Potter themed coloring books in 2016: Harry Potter Creatures Coloring Book (January 2016), Harry Potter Magical Places & Characters Coloring Book (March 2016), and Harry Potter Artifacts Coloring Book (June 2016).

Part of me wonders if I’m going to the be the only one who is completely and utterly disappointed with this coloring book.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary review copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. The opinions are my own.

Awesome...until you open

Loved this book as soon as I saw it!...but then I started flipping through the pages! One looks like a 3 year old drew it and the other is a double page of dancing, nipple pierced trolls! What!?! There's main characters that don't even have double pages but these ridiculous trolls do?

Unlearning Liberty: Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate, by Greg Lukianoff

For over a generation, shocking cases of censorship at America's colleges and universities have taught students the wrong lessons about living in a free society. Drawing on a decade of experience battling for freedom of speech on campus, First Amendment lawyer Greg Lukianoff reveals how higher education fails to teach students to become critical thinkers: by stifling open debate, our campuses are supercharging ideological divisions, promoting groupthink, and encouraging an unscholarly certainty about complex issues.

Lukianoff walks readers through the life of a modern-day college student, from orientation to the end of freshman year. Through this lens, he describes startling violations of free speech rights: a student in Indiana punished for publicly reading a book, a student in Georgia expelled for a pro-environment collage he posted on Facebook, students at Yale banned from putting an F. Scott Fitzgerald quote on a T shirt, and students across the country corralled into tiny "free speech zones" when they wanted to express their views.

But Lukianoff goes further, demonstrating how this culture of censorship is bleeding into the larger society. As he explores public controversies involving Juan Williams, Rush Limbaugh, Bill Maher, Richard Dawkins, Larry Summers - even Dave Barry and Jon Stewart - Lukianoff paints a stark picture of our ability as a nation to discuss important issues rationally. Unlearning Liberty: Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate illuminates how intolerance for dissent and debate on today's campus threatens the freedom of every citizen and makes us all just a little bit dumber.

Fantastic book - Unfortunately for liberty
By Peter
Can't say it any better than Ken at Popehat.com (awesome free speach legal blog).

In Unlearning Liberty, Greg reviews the different occasions and excuses for censorship in modern American universities, marshaling a bewildering array of case studies. Some were familiar to me: the ludicrous reaction to posters at University of Wisconsin-Stout, the legal threats to critics of the administration of Peace College, and the entirely repellent tale of Indiana University punishing a student worker for reading a book about struggles against the Klan in front of coworkers. Many others were new to me -- and I follow FIRE fairly closely. Greg has a talent for describing instances of censorship in a way to outrage me anew even if I have heard of them before. (For instance, I defy anyone to read about the University of Delaware's frankly Stalinist reeducation program for frosh without feeling disgust and contempt; Greg offers new details that led me to put the book down and go take a walk for a while.)

But this is not merely a compilation of cases. Greg traces the history of campus censorship after the "political correctness" disputes of the 1990s, and weaves the incidents of censorship together to explain how different vaguely defined ideas (like "harassment" and "disruption" and "civility") are used in an unprincipled manner as trump cards to shut people up. Moreover, Greg rather convincingly illustrates how university censorship impacts the attitudes and tolerances of students, and explains why we should fear that students taught to submit to censorship and due process violations will not be reliable supporters of free expression or due process as voting adults.

something anyone going to college and their parents should read!
By K. Freberg
The book "UNLEARNING LIBERTY" is an insightful look into academia today and although Lukianoff points to the many administrators that have run an 'underground railroad' of sorts to funnel abused students and faculty to legal remedy... there are far too many administrators and faculty who feel that it is their right to restrict the rights of others, punish the guilty without due process and destroy the careers and lives of the innocent.

The book chronicles many of the cases of FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) over a ten year period. Some will make you mad, some will make you cry. This book should be given to every freshman entering a college or university today... so they know what their rights are... where they can appeal if they find themselves unfairly under the administrative boot... and, most importantly, that they are not alone.

So, whether you are on the left or the right of the political spectrum, you will find this book quietly disturbing.... and a must read.

What Happens on Many College Campuses and Why It Matters for All of Us!
By Kevin Currie-Knight
Greg Lukianoff is one of the key figures in a 'watchdog' group called FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education). Similar to a group like the ACLU, fire is devoted to protecting students' speech and due process rights on college campuses. The fact is that most people don't seem to know - or are not concerned about - the extent to which many schools do censor student speech: from relegating student speech to small "free speech zones," to painfully ambiguous speech codes that ban everything from insensitive jokes to "inappropriately directed laughter," to out-and-out residence life programs designed around imbuing students with the "correct" political messages. This book not only profiles dozens of such cases, but makes a strong argument as to why all of us - whether in college or not - suffer as a result.

These chapters are organized in a sort of 'chronological order' based on a student's academic career. So, the first chapter focuses on student rights in high schools (which FIRE doesn't per se deal with, but are important for setting up the rest of the book). The next several chapters focus on things like the 'residence life programs' mentioned earlier - like the one at my current university, the U of Delaware. (I won't explain it here; you can easily find out more online.) Later chapters focus on how free speech and expression is often stifled in the classroom and how, in some cases, students have been made to engage in political acts with which they may not disagree as a condition for passing a class or graduating a program! Lastly, we focus on issues where professors have been removed from departments for speech that someone somewhere judged to be offensive (like the history professor who was asked to resign for using the word 'wetback' in class....with the point of explaining the historical origins of the term).

Throughout, Lukianoff argues as to why all of us - whether student, parent, or neither - should care about this. If we want students who become critical thinkers, innovators, and have a strong sense of individuality, then allowing free speech in those institutions that are supposed to aid students in all of these - colleges and universities - is a must. If we want to raise students who are capable of reasoned debate - as opposed either to students who learn to censor themselves automatically, or only 'discuss' amongst those with whom they already agree in an attempt to 'play it safe,' we need to model those things in the college and university environment. (Lukianoff also talks about a possible link between the quiet classroom syndrome' many professors know all too well and the punishing of student speech on campuses.) As it stands, Lukianoff cites several surveys which indicate that a very low number of students, and a lower number of faculty (!) believe it is 'safe' to hold unconventional opinions on campus. And if colleges and universities are preparing the leaders of the future, this uncomfortability with holding 'different' opinions will affect the overall social climate....for the worse, in my opinion.

[It is also worth noting that Lukianoff discusses cases of censorship on the "left" and "right." Why is this worth bringing up? Because just as the ACLU often gets berated as a "leftist" institution, FIRE oten gets branded a "right wing" institution. This is because a good many of the cases involve "conservative" folk getting in trouble in "liberal" institutions. But, as Lukianoff explains, this is not because FIRE seeks out cases by political motive, but because as it stands, the majority of campuses seem to be those where "conservative" opinions are more likely to offend than "liberal" ones. But, yes, Lukianoff profiles a good number of cases where "liberal" groups or individuals were defended, also.Lukianoff himself identifies as a moderate democrat.]

Anyhow, this is a really engaging and somewhat maddening book to read. While some of the stories Lukianoff recounts are quite maddening, what is worse is that Lukianoff is obviously frustrated that few seem to be alarmed. Students, in his experience, have often internalized and accepted a world of "free speech zones," applying for permits in order to pass out flyers and keeping one's mouth shut when one has an idea that may clash with the professor's or university's. I hope Lukianoff can convince more people about the seriousness of this issue.

If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho, by Sappho

Of the nine books of lyrics the ancient Greek poet Sappho is said to have composed, only one poem has survived complete. The rest are fragments. In this miraculous new translation, acclaimed poet and classicist Anne Carson presents all of Sappho’s fragments, in Greek and in English, as if on the ragged scraps of papyrus that preserve them, inviting a thrill of discovery and conjecture that can be described only as electric—or, to use Sappho’s words, as “thin fire . . . racing under skin.” By combining the ancient mysteries of Sappho with the contemporary wizardry of one of our most fearless and original poets, If Not, Winter provides a tantalizing window onto the genius of a woman whose lyric power spans millennia.

From Publishers Weekly
A classicist at McGill University, Carson has mined Greek literature, and Sappho in particular, to tremendous effect and acclaim in her poetry and essays. Her prose Eros the Bittersweet (1986) discussed Sappho's term "glukupikron" ("sweetbitter") among other Greek concepts, while the poems of Autobiography of Red (1998) reinvented surviving fragments of the Greek poet Stesichoros, to take just two examples. Here, Carson fully channels one of the most iconic yet least transparent Greek poets, whose work comes to us mostly in fragments. In a four-page preface, Carson addresses the fact that very little is known for certain about Sappho, apart from the fact that she lived in the "city of Mytilene on the island of Lesbos from about 630 B.C." and "appears to have devoted her life to composing songs." She bases her translation, beautifully presented here with the Greek en face, on a 1971 transcription by the scholar Eva-Maria Voigt, published in Amsterdam, and includes all the fragments published by Voigt in which "at least one word is legible," using "the plainest language I could find, using where possible the same order of words and thoughts as Sappho did." Since Sappho's texts are fragments, it is inevitable that Carson offers some pages that are mostly brackets indicating missing material, suggestively interspersed with the words "youth" or "sinful," for example, or the phrases "as long as you want" or "my darling one." As with Joyce's Homeric "winedark sea," Carson includes compounds like "sweetflowing" or "farshooting" to render complex Greek words. Carson grudgingly allows a lesbian interpretation for some of the poems, noting that "[i]t seems that she knew and loved women as deeply as she did music. Can we leave the matter there?" (About an equal number of poems in this collection are about loving men.) With 26 cogent pages of notes to individual poems, an eight-page "Who's Who" of names mentioned in the poems, four pages of "Testimonia" about Sappho and Carson's get-out-of-the-way-of-the-poems approach to translation, the uninitiated should have no problem entering this rich territory and constructing their own versions of the enigmatic poet.

From Library Journal
The lyric poetry of antiquity is often as important to modern poets as it is to translators and classical scholars. Mulroy is a professor of classics (Univ. of Wisconsin, Milwaukee), and Carson (classics, McGill Univ.; The Beauty of the Husband) and the late William Matthews (After All: Last Poems) are well-regarded poets. Following Pound's dictum to "make it new," Mulroy and Matthews translate Catullus and Horace into modern American idiom, striving where possible to find cultural equivalents rather than literal translations. At the same time, they try to be true to the shifting tones and rhythms of their originals. The results are fluent, giving some sense of the contemporaneousness that Catullus and Horace would have evoked in their audiences. Carson's translation follows Sappho's diction and form much more closely and includes the Greek original on the facing page. Much of what survives of Sappho are fragments, often just a stray word, phrase, or even a few letters. Like many modern poets, Carson deploys these on the blank page, letting their suggestiveness fill the gaps and create whole lyrics in the imagination of the readers. All three translators aim for a general audience, though Mulroy and Carson also include notes and introductions of value to the more scholarly reader. All three books are recommended for both public and academic libraries. T.L. Cooksey, Armstrong Atlantic State Univ., Savannah, GA

“A selfless, faithful, and boldly delicate achievement.” —Boston Review

Part Poetry, Part Forensic Pathology
By Dr. Limfoma Mbweebwee
Reading Sappho is like visiting the Louvre after a major fire. Very little of her work is left. You can read all of it in an hour or two. It will not change your world, so don't expect much.

It's impossible to get a good picture of her from this, but it's all there is, so you might as well look it over. It's like visiting the ruins of Rome. You don't go to the ruins to see a vital, bustling city; you go to see its remains and make guesses about what it used to be. When you read Sappho, you're basically looking at a partial corpse that used to be a major celebrity and respected artist, and you can try to decide what the pieces would be if you could put them back together and breathe life back into them.

Brilliant
By JV
This work is a treasure, I don't know how we can thank Pof. Carson enough. This is a complete collection of all we have left of the greatest poetess of the ancient age. They are all in fragments and the way Prof. Carson has set them out for us they haunt. The title itself says it all, a fragment, what comes before or after may be lost forever: "If not, winter", but even that small snippet strikes. Over two thousand years and Sappho still touches us.

Should Have Been Proofed
By Cheryl Johnson
The story line was compelling UNTIL the heroine switched from calling her dog Jax in chapter 1 to Toby in chapter 2. In chapter 1 Toby was the name of the hero's horse. I've been writing for more than 20 years and I still keep post-it notes on the wall with hair and eye color, nicknames, anything that could possibly trip me up later in the story and take my readers totally out of the fantasy I've created.

Couldn't finish it sorry!
By Libby Cercasa
I just couldn't find it believable. Yeah, yeah, I know ... it's fiction! But there didn't seem to be enough discussion as to why things were happening. It was as if you were expected to just say 'oh of course'. And, like the previous reviewer, I noticed the mix up with the dog and horse.
I might go back and give it another go later but I won't be rushing!
