A thorough dissertation on the subject of unit testing

Bottom line: this book really makes you think hard about unit testing. By walking through a number of examples, the author explores a variety of issues that tend to arise in production-quality unit tests. As he walks through, he explains various trade-offs and their possible impacts on test effectiveness, code readability, maintenance, and extensibility, focusing especially on their effects on other members of the development team, not just the original test author. As a practicing programmer, I appreciate not only this approach, but also the respect the author gives his readers by not trying to pretend unit testing is simple or magical. I think developers at all levels of experience can benefit from this book.

A breath of fresh air in the subject of unit testing

Things I really like:

* The evolution of a hairy test to something really clean is elegant.

* It skips the usual slow history and get straight to the point.

* I wish more people wrote tests like this. I see so many unit tests that make me sad due to over complicated abstractions that hamper readability. Having a book to point people at will really help.

* Doesn't get carried away with frameworks, DSLs and such, but mostly it's just really straight forward programming.

Thank you Mr Fields! I will be recommending this book to many people.

Clear guide to writing effective unit tests.

This is a book I plan on strongly recommending to other developers. Jay Fields presents his strategy for testing and his definition of a unit test. The book starts with some marginal unit tests and slowly improves them. I found myself feeling uncomfortable with the initial version of the tests and it was rewarding seeing the tests improve and having that uncomfortable feeling disappear.

Why do you write tests? What do you try to get out of testing? How do you make failing tests useful? By the time you finish this book you should have a been driven to think about those questions and more. Even it you don't agree with Jay's approach this book will make you think.

You should read this book.

Norman Tyler, FAICP, is faculty and former director of the Urban and Regional Planning program at Eastern Michigan University. A Great Introduction to Historic Preservation

Having recently purchased an older home in an historic neighborhood, I thought it would be a good idea to aquaint myself with the topic of historic preservation. Norman Tyler's "Historic Preservation" was originally written as a text for a college class on historic preservation. His purpose was to expose his students to the major themes in the field of preservation.

The book starts with a philosophical overview of preservation and moves onto chapters dealing with historic districts and the legal basis for preservation. I found his chapter on the documentation and designation of individual historic properties to be most valuable. Tyler concludes with chapters on design issues, preservation technology, downtown reviatalization and preservation economics.

This book is a well written introduction that will get you started in learning more about historic introduction. Highly recommended.

Most readable and comprehensive preservation book

For the past seven years I have worked full time as a historic preservation professional, compiling historic resource surveys, writing nominations for the National Register of Historic Places, and a wide variety of other preservation related projects. I serve on our local historic district commission and have just completed a city-wide survey of Kalamazoo's historic resources. Currently I am also teaching Historic Preservation at Western Michigan University and I was delighted to find Norm Tyler's book. This book is an excellent resource for the beginning preservationist, whether they be a student in a formal academic setting or someone who just likes old buildings. My students find it to be very readable and comprehensive. I am especially pleased to find the variety of real-life examples Tyler presents reflecting the way preservation is practiced and not just idealistic theory. This book was the preferred Christmas gift among preservationists in my area in 2000. I can recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone interested in preserving our history.

Today he runs the thriving Caribbean Custom Motorcycle shop in San Juan, but he still relies on the resourcefulness and creativity that made his early builds possible.

A great addition to the collection

If you are a motorcycle enthusiast, a gear head, have an active bike building project or just thinking about one this is a great book to have as part of your collection. The book is geared, no pun intended, to the beginner but regardless of your level of experience it has some great tips to think of when doing a project, especially, as the book is focused on when you are on a budget.

This will give the bobber builder some ideas that they can incorporate into their own projects. This isn't a detailed instruction manual just an overview of the process on a few of the author's builds. You have to supply your own imagination on your project.

The description of the book says it all. If you have the desire to build it, this book will show you how. Not in the literal sense of how to weld, machine parts and pound metal shapes, that would be another book altogether. But is does go through the process and how to salvage used, eclectic parts for your project. The pictures are glossy and well described, the ideas useful and the process brilliant. Now to find a knuckle head to start my project...

About the Author
Mike Walsh is a veteran journalist, broadcaster and historian of worldwide reputation. His critics are not defined by culture or ethnicity but by liars of mostly European ethnicity. A fugitive only from leftists, palace scribblers and censors, whom he dismisses as renegade Europeans, he has shrugged off their wrath over 50 years of writing. Mike has quite a pedigree. His Irish-American father, Patrick, by the time he reached 40-years of age, had fought in four conflicts. As a rebel in the Irish peoples guerrilla war against British Army’s Black and Tans. These British Army irregulars, mostly dredged from England’s prisons, were notorious for their anti-Irish viciousness. Patrick also fought in the Irish War of Independence. Mike’s father went on to fight in the most ferocious hand-to-hand battles during the Spanish Civil War. Whilst on the frontlines, he was a close associate and friend of American war correspondent, Ernest Hemingway. Such was his father’s literary merit; he formed a close and enduring friendship with Ireland’s most celebrated playwright, Sean O’Casey. Eventually, but not finally, his father served in the Royal Air Force during World War Two as an aircraft fitter / flier. Mikes mother, Kathleen, from a literary family, and who also mentored Mike’s writing skills, was a corresponding friend of Dolores Ibarruri, Spain's Civil War revolutionary La Pasionaria. A tireless traveler, Mike, from the age of 26, was consumed by a passion for truth and justice. Inevitably, this leads him to discover the potpourri of lies, infamies, cover-ups and crimes by losers who had militarily defeated the Reich. This book is old school, but it has great diagrams, schematics and well written explanation of electrical principles, which don't change. The main reason I bought it is that it also has a section for motor control, which works well for wiring up panel boards to control motors.
